Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana ruang alternatif seni rupa yang ada di Surabaya mempunyai peran dan fungsi dalam melakukan aktivitas dan kegiatan dalam menumbuhkan wacana seni rupa. Tujuan masalah penelitian ini yaitu (1) Mendeskripsikan bagaimana pertumbuhan seni dan ruang alternatif seni rupa di Surabaya, (2) Mendeskripsikan bagaimana fungsi secara sosial, fungsi secara edukasi, dan fungsi secara life style, (3). Mendeskripsikan bagaiamana ruang alternatif memberikan makna edukasi secara kognitif, afektif, dan psikomotorik.
Jenis penelitian yang digunakan ialah penelitian kualitatif dengan metode pengumpulan data berupa wawancara, observasi, studi data dan rekaman. Metode tersebut digunakan untuk mengamati subjek penelitian yaitu masing-masing ruang alternatif seni rupa yang beroperasi secara kegiatan di Surabaya. Sedangkan data pendukung didapat dari Foto kegiatan maupun pamflet kegiatan. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis dengan teori sosiologi seni dan teori perubahan sosial.
Berkaitan dengan rumusan masalah yang telah ditentukan, maka hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) secara konsep pertumbuhan dalam ruang alternatif seni rupa di Surabaya menjelaskan bagaiamana proses historiografi perjalanan seni rupa menemukan karakteristik dalam menjalankan wacana secara komplek. (2) secara konsep fungsi dari beberapa kegiatan ataupun aktivitas yang dilakukan dalam ruang alternatif mendapat respon maupun manfaat bagi lingkungan, pelaku seni, masyarakat seni dalam apresiator. (3) makna edukasi yng didapat dari ruang alternatif seni rupa di Surabaya adalah sebagai daya pemicu atau motivasi pembelajaran secara non formal, proses apresiasi, dan motivasi secara produktif dalam bekarya.

This study aims to examine how alternative art spaces in Surabaya have roles and functions in carrying out activities and activities in fostering art discourse. The objectives of this research problem are (1) to describe how the growth of art and alternative spaces for art in Surabaya, (2) to describe how it functions socially, functions educationally, and functions in a life style, (3). Describe how alternative spaces provide educational meaning in cognitive, affective, and psychomotor ways.
This type of research is qualitative research with data collection methods in the form of interviews, observation, data study and recordings. This method is used to observe the research subjects, namely each alternative art space that operates activities in Surabaya. While supporting data is obtained from activity photos and activity pamphlets. The collected data were analyzed using the sociological theory of art and the theory of social change.
In connection with the formulation of the problems that have been determined, the results of this study indicate that (1) the concept of growth in alternative art spaces in Surabaya explains how the historiographical process of the art journey finds characteristics in carrying out complex discourses. (2) conceptually the function of several activities or activities carried out in an alternative space receives a response or benefit for the environment, art actors, and the art community in appreciators. (3) the meaning of education obtained from alternative art spaces in Surabaya is as a trigger or motivation for non-formal learning, the process of appreciation, and productive motivation in working.
