The Effectiveness Of Motivational Interviewing (MI) Techniques In Reducing Academic Procrastination Due To Distractions From The Use Of The TikTok Application Among Junior High School Students

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of group counseling services using Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques in reducing academic procrastination caused by TikTok app distractions among junior high school students. The study uses a quantitative approach with a pretest–posttest control group experimental design. The research subjects consisted of 12 eighth-grade students at Tri Karya Junior High School in Surabaya who had high levels of academic procrastination based on Tuckman's theory (1991). This study modified the model used by Novri (2022) by adapting it to the context of academic procrastination due to distraction from the use of the TikTok application among junior high school students.
Data analysis began with a Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality test, which showed that some of the data were not normally distributed. Therefore, the researcher used the Mann–Whitney U test to test the difference between the experimental group and the control group, as well as the N-Gain test to assess the effectiveness of the treatment. The Mann–Whitney test results showed a significance value of 0.076 (p > 0.05), which means that there was no significant difference between the two groups. However, the N-Gain test results showed higher effectiveness in the experimental group with an average of 62.06% (sufficiently effective category) compared to the control group at 51.37% (less effective category).
Thus, although there was no statistically significant difference, in practical terms, group counseling services using the Motivational Interviewing technique proved to be quite effective in reducing academic procrastination due to TikTok distraction. This approach helped students increase their intrinsic motivation, self-awareness, and digital self-regulation skills in a positive way.
