This study aims to develop a cultural heritage-based teaching module that is effective, practical, and feasible for use in social studies (IPS) education to enhance students' cultural literacy. The module was designed using the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation, focusing on cultural heritage preservation through an outdoor learning approach. Feasibility validation was conducted by experts in content, design, language, and education practitioners, while the module’s effectiveness was tested using pre-test and post-test scores analyzed with a paired sample t-test. Practicality testing was conducted through a questionnaire distributed to students after the learning process.
The validation results indicate that the module achieved an average score of 92.75%, categorized as highly feasible. Effectiveness testing showed a significant improvement in students' average scores from 84,1 (pre-test) to 93.3 (post-test), with a t-stat value of -15,3 (p < 0.001) and a large effect size (Cohen's d = -2.79), demonstrating the module's significant impact on enhancing cultural literacy. Practicality testing revealed that the module was rated highly practical, with an average score of 89%, particularly in aspects of language clarity, design appeal, and ease of use. Field observations showed that students actively participated, demonstrated positive attitudes toward cultural preservation, and applied cultural literacy values in their daily lives.
However, several limitations were identified, such as the tight schedule of outdoor learning activities and the heavy workload during on-site observations which some students found burdensome. For future development, it is recommended to simplify field tasks, reduce the number of observation sites, and strengthen the integration of environmental conservation materials to provide a more holistic perspective. This module has significant potential as an innovative social studies learning medium, relevant to global challenges, and capable of fostering students' cultural and environmental awareness. With sustaine implementation, this module can serve as a strategic tool in education that emphasizes cultural literacy and sustainability.
