Green Synthesis of TiO2 Nanoparticle with Terminalia catappa Leaf Extract and Photocatalytic Activity in The Degradation of methylene Blue
TiO2 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using a green synthesis method using ketapang leaf extract as a reducing agent and capping agent. The aim of this research is to synthesize TiO2 nanoparticles using Ketapang leaf extract, determine the characteristics of TiO2 nanoparticles from Ketapang leaf extract, and determine their photocatalytic activity in the degradation of methylene blue. TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized using the sol-gel method with varying volumes of 10, 20, 30, and 40 mL of ketapang leaf extract. Characterization was carried out using Fourier Transform Insfrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) to determine functional groups, and using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to determine the phase and crystal size. The results of FT-IR characterization resulted in the presence of Ti-O at a wavelength of 472 cm-1 for TiO2-1, 475 cm-1 for TiO2-2, 575 cm-1 for TiO2-3, and 482 cm-1 for TiO2-4. -OH group at wavelength 3429 cm-1 for TiO2-1, 3436 cm-1 for TiO2-2, 3439 cm-1 for TiO2-3, 3443 cm-1 for TiO2-4. The results of TiO2 nanoparticle characterization explained that the TiO2 crystal size of Ketapang leaf extract with variations of Ketapang leaf extract of 10, 20, 30, and 40 mL, respectively, was 8.5; 6.8; 6.3; and 5.8 nm. The XRD characterization results showed 2θ diffraction peaks, 25, 37, 48, 54, 62, 69, and 75, which indicated that the four TiO2 samples from Ketapang leaf extract had anatase phase. The photocatalytic activity of 40 mL volume of TiO2 from Ketapang leaf extract towards the degradation of methylene blue produced an optimum TiO2 nanoparticle mass of 30 mg which successfully degraded up to 75.99%. The optimum contact time was 80 minutes which succeeded in degrading 75.99%. The optimum methylene blue concentration was 5 ppm which was successfully degraded up to 77.33%
