SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF THE COVER OF THE MANGA "ITO JUNJI: BEST OF BEST"

ABSTRAK: Sampul sebuah karya tulis memiliki peran penting untuk merepresentasikan isi cerita yang bertugas menarik perhatian pembaca. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis makna semiotika yang terkandung dalam sampul manga “Ito Junji Best of Best”, khususnya keterkaitannya dengan cerita utama yang dimuat dalam cerita utama “Venus in the Blind Spot” karya Junji Ito. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Roland Barthes yang mengkaji makna denotasi, konotasi, dan ideologi (mitos) dari elemen visual sampul berupa komposisi warna, ilustrasi, tipografi, serta simbol-simbol yang digunakan. Serta semiotika sosial Theo Van Leeuwen untuk menguak makna budaya sosial yang berkembang untuk melatar belakangi makna desain sampul menurut kasus Junko Furuta. Hasil dari penelitian ini berupa adanya tanda-tanda yang dimuat pada elemen visual melatar belakangi interpretasi misteri yang dibawakan oleh Junji Ito dengan isu sosial yang terjadi pada perempuan sebagai implementasi semiotika sosial pada desain sampul manga horor.

ABSTRACT: The cover of a written work has an important role to represent the content of the story that is tasked with attracting the attention of readers. This study aims to analyze the semiotic meaning contained in the cover of the manga "Ito Junji Best of Best", especially its relationship to the main story contained in the main story "Venus in the Blind Spot" by Ito Junji. This study uses Roland Barthes' semiotic approach which examines the meaning of denotation, connotation, and ideology (myth) in the visual elements of the cover, such as color composition, illustrations, typography, and symbols used. Theo Van Leeuwen's social semiotics. The results of the analysis show that which has continuity with the social issues that occurred in Junko Furuta. Thus, the cover design of the manga “Ito Junji Best pf Best” not only functions as the main identity, but also implies a meaning that is connected to real cases of social issues that occur on women.
