SMK Negeri 12 Surabaya yang berbasis seni budaya yang setiap tahun terdapat peserta didik drop out 150 sampai dengan 200 orang anak. Tantangannya adalah mencari faktor penyebab peserta didik yang drop out dan mencari strategi solusinya. Dalam proses pembelajaran di SMK yang berbasis seni budaya memerlukan kompetensi dasar yang didukung bakat dan minat, serta motivasi belajar yang memadai. Dengan demikian apabila syarat dasar utama tidak terpenuhi akan bermasalah pada proses pembelajaran nanti. Beberapa peneliti telah mengeksplorasi faktor-faktor penyebab peserta didik drop out. Faktor-faktor tersebut antara lain, karena salah pilih menentukan kompetensi keahlian, akibatnya tidak mampu dalam pembelajaran praktik kejuruan, lingkungan keluarga, dan sekolah, serta motivasi belajar. Sumber data diambil dari SMK Negeri 12 Surabaya, dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara, observasi, dan dokumen, serta motivasi belajar, yang dianalisis menggunakan analisis kualitatif. Hasil penelitian ini membuktikan faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan dan mengatasi masalah peserta didik yang drop out, dan memperoleh hasil penyebabnya adalah salah pilih kompetensi keahlian yang tidak sesuai dengan bakat dan minatnya, sehingga berakibat ketidakmampuan di bidangnya. Implikasi praktis dari hasil ini adalah untuk mencegah peserta didik yang drop out, melalui penerapan strategi penggunaan tes ketrampilan dan minat.

         SMK Negeri 12 Surabaya based on arts and culture which every year there are 150 to 200 students drop out. The challenge is to find the factors that cause students to drop out and find a solution strategy. In the learning process at SMK based on arts and culture requires basic competencies that are supported by talents and interests, as well as adequate learning motivation. Thus, if the main basic requirements are not met, there will be problems in the learning process later. Several researchers have explored the factors that cause students to drop out. These factors are, among others, due to the wrong choice to determine skill competency, as a result, they are unable to learn vocational practice, family and school environment, as well as learning motivation. The data source was taken from SMK Negeri 12 Surabaya, using qualitative methods. Data was collected through interviews, observations, and documents, as well as learning motivation, which were analyzed using qualitative analysis. The results of this study prove the factors that cause and overcome the problems of students who drop out, and get the result that the cause is the wrong choice of expertise competencies that are not in accordance with their talents and interests, resulting in incompetence in their fields. The practical implication of these results is to prevent students from dropping out, through the implementation of strategies for using skills and interest tests.
