RANCANG BANGUN SOLAR TRACKER SINGLE AXIS DENGAN 4 REFLEKTOR CAHAYA
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A SINGLE-AXIS SOLAR TRACKING SYSTEM EQUIPPED WITH FOUR LIGHT REFLECTORS

The efficiency of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) in tropical regions like Indonesia is heavily influenced by how optimally solar panels capture solar radiation. Static solar panels experience a significant drop in output, especially in the morning and evening, due to the oblique angle of sunlight and low irradiation intensity. Meanwhile, conventional solar trackers are quite effective at keeping panels perpendicular to the sun, but their output remains low when ambient solar irradiation is inherently low. This study designs and tests a single-axis solar tracker equipped with four light reflectors, aiming to reflect additional light onto the panel surface during the morning and evening. These reflectors feature an automatic mechanism that opens to reflect light and closes when the panel temperature exceeds a threshold, preventing performance degradation caused by overheating. The system utilizes two GUVA-S12SD UV sensors oriented toward the east and west to detect the sun's direction, a DC motor with an L298N H-Bridge driver as the actuator, and an ESP32 as the microcontroller. Testing was conducted over four days with reflector angle variations of 45°, 50°, 55°, and 60°. Validation shows that the UV sensors read radiation well and function precisely for solar tracking, although the values are not yet equivalent to the global UV Index due to conversion parameter differences. The test results indicate an increase in daily energy of the PV solar tracker ranging from 12.2% to 19.4%, with the best performance achieved using a 60° reflector angle. The increase occurred during periods of low solar irradiation (approximately 06:00–08:00 and 15:00–18:00), whereas during midday (11:00–13:00), the output of both the PV solar tracker and static PV was relatively similar because the sun was at Peak Sun Hours (PSH) or its zenith, making the angle of incidence nearly perpendicular to the solar panels in both methods. It was also found that the solar panel output voltage tends to saturate around 13–14 V during midday due to panel temperature increases, despite continuously rising irradiation. This study proves that the combination of tracking and light reflectors—equipped with temperature safeguards to prevent overheating by rotating reflectors based on temperature sensor readings—is not entirely worthwhile in Indonesia, particularly in hot regions like Sidoarjo. This is because, despite an increase in solar panel output, the minimal irradiation levels during morning and evening still fail to drive a substantial surge in overall solar panel output.
