This research aims to describe the role of parents and the social interaction ability of students with autism. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. Data obtained from the interviews with both parents of two students and the school: shadow teacher (Guru Pendamping Khusus) and homeroom teacher. Then, the observation was conducted to observe the social interaction ability of students when they were having activities at school. Data analysis was done using the analysis technique of Miles and Huberman. The result of this research shows that parents have three main roles. First, as role models: figures whom children can always look up to in terms of social interaction in and outside the family. Second, as mediators, parents have the responsibility to compromise by helping their children to adapt themselves in the society, giving direction when their children face certain situations and need to respond to other people. Third, as motivators, parents need to provide space, facility, stimulus, and social support for their children in developing their social interaction ability, both associative and dissociative. This also applies in social relationship, learning activities, and activities outside of learning hours in SMP Negeri 28 Surabaya. Overall, the result of this research is that parents hold important roles towards the development of the social interaction ability of their children. Each parent has to perform their roles according to the ability and the potential of their children to obtain positive responses in social interaction.
