Correlational Study on Vocabulary Knowledge and Reading Comprehension in Expository Text of Senior High Students

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki korelasi antara pengetahuan kosakata dan pemahaman bacaan dalam teks eksposisi di antara siswa kelas 10 di salah satu SMA negeri di Surabaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian korelasi kuantitatif, dengan melibatkan 65 siswa sebagai partisipan penelitian ini. Para partisipan diminta untuk menyelesaikan beberapa instrumen tes, termasuk Tes Tingkat Kosakata Terperbarui (The Updated Vocabulary Level TesT) dari (Paul Nation, 1983) dan tes pemahaman bacaan, khususnya dalam teks ekspositori. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat korelasi positif yang kuat antara pengetahuan kosakata siswa dan kemampuan mereka untuk memahami teks ekspositori. Hal ini ditunjukkan dengan nilai koefisien dari analisis korelasi Pearson Product Moment (nilai r = 0,792). Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan kosakata memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan secara  statistik terhadap pemahaman bacaan dalam teks eksposisi, yang merupakan aspek penting dalam pembelajaran akademis.

This research is aimed to investigate the correlation between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension in expository text among 10^th grade students in one of the state high schools in Surabaya. A quantitative correlational research design was applied, involving 65 students as the participants of this study. The participants were asked to complete some test instruments, including The Updated Vocabulary Level Test (VLT) from (Paul Nation, 1983) and reading comprehension test, particularly in expository text. The results show that there is a positive strong correlation between students’ vocabulary knowledge and their ability to comprehend expository text. This shows by the coefficient value of Pearson product moment correlation analysis (r value = 0.792). This indicates that vocabulary knowledge is statistically significant to influence reading comprehension in expository text, which are essential for academic learning.
