THE INFLUENCE OF CAREER DEVELOPMENT ON EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE THROUGH MOTIVATION ON SURABAYA SHIPPING POLYTECHNIC EMPLOYEES
This study aims to analyze the impact of career development on employee performance, with motivation acting as a mediating variable. The primary focus is to understand how career development programs implemented at the Surabaya Shipping Polytechnic can enhance employee motivation, which in turn contributes to improved performance. Data was collected through the collection of questionnaires using google forms, as well as interviews with staffing staff. interviews with HR staff and observations of career development programs, such as Talent Pool and Training Need Analysis, implemented both internally and externally.
The findings reveal that career development has a significant positive effect on employee performance, with work motivation serving as a key factor that strengthens this relationship. Employees who have access to clear career development opportunities tend to be more motivated, which ultimately leads to better performance. These results are consistent with previous studies, which emphasize the critical role of work motivation in driving improved performance.
However, the study also identifies an imbalance in the application of career development programs, particularly for non permanent or contract employees, who feel they lack a clear career progression path. This situation can reduce motivation and negatively impact their work engagement. Therefore, the study recommends that organizations expand and enhance career development programs to be more inclusive, ensuring all employees have the opportunity to grow and succeed, thereby fostering a more productive work environment and achieving organizational goals.
