Tesis ini mengidentifikasi penggunaan Modality dalam mendukung pidato politik dan untuk mengungkapkan kecenderungan di baliknya, oleh karena itu peneliti meneliti pidato DonaldTrump menggunakan teori jenis Modality (Modal Deontik dan   Epistemik) berdasarkan teori (Wright, 1951; Palmer, 1986 ; Kreidler, 1998; Murcia dan Freeman, 1999; Saeed, 2003; Cruse, 2003) dan teori model Power, Identification and Manipulation (PIMI) oleh (Chilton &Schäffner, 1997; van Dijk, 2006) dengan pendekatan Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). Ada dua rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini, yang  pertama adalah apa Modality yang digunakan dalam pidato Donald J. Trump di KTT Riyadh 2017. Kedua, bagaimana konteks tersebut mendukung Donald J. Trump dalam menggunakan Modality.

Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif yang  berisi deskdripsi dan data dilaporkan dalam bentuk kalimat.  Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti memilih untuk menganalisis dokumen dan bahan – bahan lainnya dimana dokumen tersebut diambil dari pidato Donald J. Trump di KTT Riyadh 2017. Penelitian ini menyelidiki penggunaan Auxiliary Modal oleh Donald Trump, kemudian mengklasifikasikannya ke dalam jenis Modality. Setelah itu, peneliti mengadopsi pendekatan CDA menggunakan Model PIMI sebagai alat untuk menganalisis kecenderungan dan konteks dalam mendukung pidato Donald J. Trump. Penelitian ini memberikan pembahasan yang  lebih jauh dan luas tentang ekspresi Modality dalam pidato Donald J. Trump dan konteks yang mendukungnya dalam mengekspresikan kecenderungan dalam pidato tersebut.

Sebagai hasilnya, Donald J. Trump menggunakan semua jenis Modality seperti Deontic Modality (izin dank ewajiban) dan Epistemic Modality (probabilitas/kemungkinan). Izin, kewajiban, dan probabilitas atau kemungkinan berhasil dalam menunjukkan kekuatan, ideologi, dan manipulasinya. Konteks tersebut mendukung pidato Donald J. Trump dalam ekspresi Modality-nya untuk mempromosikan melawan Terorisme danmengintervensi konflik Timur Tengah. Lebih lanjut, peneliti berharap kombinasi teori ini dapat diimplementasikan dalam analisis dan menghasilkan wacana politik yang lebih luas. Peneliti juga terbuka untuk studi lebih lanjut yang berkaitan dengan topic ini dalam meningkatkan pemikiran kritis pembaca,  dan menambahkan lebih banyak diskusi dalam bahasa dan politik. Diharapkan kedepannya studi linguistik dapat menjadi alat yang lebih transparan dalam mengkaji politik khususnya di Indonesia.

The thesis is in search of the use of Modality in supporting a political speech and for revealing the tendencies behind it, therefore it examines Donald Trump’s speeches using Types of Modality (Deontic and Epistemic modal) theory based on (Wright, 1951;Palmer, 1986; Kreidler, 1998; Murcia and Freeman, 1999; Saeed, 2003; Cruse, 2003) and Power, Identification and Manipulation (PIMI) model theory by (Chilton &Schäffner, 1997; van Dijk, 2006)under Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. There are two research questions in the study, the first is what are the modalities used in Donald J. Trump speech in Riyadh summit 2017. The second is how the contexts support Donald J. Trump in supporting those Modalities.

The study implements qualitative method consist of description and the data are reported in words. In collecting the data, the researcher chooses to analyze the documents and material culture where the document is taken from Donald J. Trump speech in Riyadh Summit 2017. It investigates the use of auxiliary modal by Donald Trump, then it is classified into type of Modality. Afterwards, the researcher adopts CDA approach using PIMI Model as the tool to analyze the tendencies and the context in supporting Donald J. Trump speech. This research provides a considerably wider knowledge of the expression of Modality in Donald J. Trump's speech and the context that supports it in revealing the tendencies within the speech.

As the result, Donald J. Trump uses all type of Modality of Deontic modal (permission and obligation) and Epistemic modal (probability/possibility). Permission, obligation, and probability or possibility work in showing his power, ideology, and manipulation. The context support Donald J. Trump speech in his Modality expression to promote against Terrorism and intervene Middle East conflicts. Furthermore, the researcher is expected that this tool can be implemented in broader analysis and result in political discourse. The researcher also opens for further study that related to this topic in increasing the critical thinking of the readers, and adding more discussion in language and politics. It is also expected in the future that linguistic study can be a tool of transparency in political field especially in Indonesia.
