VISUAL ATTRACTION AND SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF FEMALE DANCERS IN THE JARANAN SENTHEREWE PERFORMANCE: A STUDY OF GENDER REPRESENTATION

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membahas dominasi penari perempuan dalam pertunjukan Jaranan Sentherewe di Kabupaten Tulungagung serta pemaknaan tubuh perempuan di atas panggung pertunjukan rakyat. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan perspektif kritis. Teknik pengumpulan data meliputi observasi pertunjukan, wawancara mendalam dengan seniman, pengelola kelompok jaranan, dan penonton, serta dokumentasi visual. Instrumen penelitian terdiri atas pedoman observasi, pedoman wawancara, dan catatan lapangan. Analisis data dilakukan melalui tahap reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan simpulan dengan menggunakan teori representasi Stuart Hall, performativitas gender Judith Butler, konsep male gaze Laura Mulvey, Respon Readers, serta pendekatan semiotika untuk membaca simbol dan tanda visual dalam pertunjukan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kehadiran penari perempuan tidak hanya merepresentasikan pengembangan artistik dan inovasi pertunjukan, tetapi juga menjadi daya tarik visual yang berpotensi mengarah pada komodifikasi dan eksploitasi tubuh perempuan. Persepsi masyarakat terhadap fenomena ini dipengaruhi oleh perbedaan generasi, di mana kelompok usia tua cenderung bersikap kritis, sementara kelompok usia muda dan sangat muda lebih menerima dengan orientasi hiburan dan estetika visual. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa dominasi penari perempuan dalam Jaranan Sentherewe berada dalam ketegangan antara nilai estetika, kreativitas pertunjukan, dan praktik eksploitasi.

This study aims to examine the dominance of female dancers in Jaranan Sentherewe performances in Tulungagung Regency and the meanings attributed to the female body on the stage of folk performance. The research employs a qualitative approach with a critical perspective. Data were collected through performance observation, in-depth interviews with artists, jaranan group managers, and audience members, as well as visual documentation. The research instruments consisted of observation guidelines, interview guides, and field notes. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, employing Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, Laura Mulvey’s concept of the male gaze, reader-response theory, and a semiotic approach to interpret visual symbols and signs within the performances. The findings indicate that the presence of female dancers not only represents artistic development and performance innovation but also functions as a visual attraction that has the potential to lead to the commodification and exploitation of the female body. Public perceptions of this phenomenon are influenced by generational differences, with older audiences tending to adopt a more critical stance, while younger and very young audiences are more accepting, emphasizing entertainment and visual aesthetics. The study concludes that the dominance of female dancers in Jaranan Sentherewe exists within a tension between aesthetic values, creative performance practices, and forms of exploitation.
