A Long Way Down adalah salah satu karya novel dari penulis Inggris bernama Nick Hornby. Novel tersebut menceritakan tentang empat karakter yang berusaha melakukan bunuh diri pada malam Tahun Baru di gedung Topper’s House, London. Fokus penelitian ini pada salah satu tokoh utama di dalam novel ini bernama Martin Sharp dan menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi sastra dari Emile Durkheim dan teori bunuh dirinya dalam buku Le Suicide untuk menganalisis kecenderungan bunuh diri dari Martin Sharp.

Terdapat dua rumusan masalah dalam karya ini: 1. Bagaimana kecenderungan bunuh diri digambarkan dalam A Long Way Down  dan 2. Apa pengaruh sosio-kultural pada kecendurungan bunuh diri Martin Sharp. Tujuan dari studi ini adalah untuk menggambarkan kecenderungan bunuh diri dalam karya novel serta hal sosio-kultural apa saja yang menjadi penyebab keinginan bunuh diri. Data inti dari penelitian ini diambil dari solilokui dan narasi pemikiran dari Martin Sharp. Data dianalisis menggunakan teori yang sudah disebutkan sebelumnya.

Hasil dari studi ini menunjukkan bahwa kecenderungan bunuh diri dari Martin Sharp ini disebabkan oleh 3 hal sosio-kultural yang melingkupinya: 1. Statusnya sebagai pria paruh baya di Inggris, 2. Hubungan Keluarga, 3. Tekanan sosial. Pemikiran bunuh diri dari Martin Sharp dikategorikan sebagai bunuh diri egoistis menurut teori bunuh diri dari Emile Durkheim

A Long Way Down is one of the novel works of the English author Nick Hornby. This novel tells about four characters that need to be done on New Year's Eve at the Topper's House building, London. The focus of this research on one of the main characters in this novel named Martin Sharp and using literary sociology from Emile Durkheim and the theory of questioning himself in Le Suicide's book to analyze suicide use from Martin Sharp.

There are two formulations of the problem in this work: 1. How is the tendency of self-murder to be described in A Long Way Down and 2. What is the socio-cultural influence on suicidal tendency of Martin Sharp. The purpose of this study is to reflect the desire to kill themselves in novel works and what socio-cultural things are the cause of the desire to kill themselves. The core data from this study were taken from soliloquy and the thought narrative of Martin Sharp. Data is analyzed using theories that have been previously agreed upon.

The results of this study show that there are those who prove themselves from Martin Sharp causing by 3 socio-cultural issues that surround it: 1. His status as a man who is middle-aged in England, 2. Family Relations, 3. Social pressure. The thought of self-killing from Martin Sharp was categorized as egoistic self-murder according to the suicide theory of Emile Durkheim.
