This research focuses on developing an educational tool in the form of a Treasure Hunt game to enhance the speaking and metacognitive abilities of Grade VI elementary students in the "Direction and Location" topic. It adopts the ADDIE development model, which consists of five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The participants of this study were Grade VI students from Sekolah Indonesia Johor Bahru.
The Treasure Hunt game was designed with features such as interactive maps, directional prompts, quizzes, and missions, aimed at fostering verbal interactions in an engaging and challenging learning environment. Expert and teacher validations confirmed that the game is highly suitable for educational use. Data were collected through pretest and posttest assessments of speaking and metacognitive skills following the implementation of the game.
The findings reveal significant improvements: (1) students' speaking skills increased notably, with the average posttest score rising to 70.53 from a pretest score of 58.95, supported by a t-value of 4.61 (p < 0.05); and (2) metacognitive skills also showed significant growth, with an average N-Gain score of 0.7217, categorized as high. A 95% confidence interval and a median N-Gain score of 0.7223 further substantiate these results.
In conclusion, the Treasure Hunt game effectively enhances students' speaking and metacognitive skills in English learning, offering an engaging and interactive technology-based learning experience. This study recommends the use of Treasure Hunt games as an innovative and active learning approach to improve critical skills, particularly in teaching the "Direction and Location" material to elementary school students.
