The January 12, 2002 Social Riots in Sidoarjo
Penelitian ini membahas kerusuhan sosial 12 Januari 2002 yang terjadi di Desa Tenggulunan dan Sepande, Kecamatan Candi, Kabupaten Sidoarjo. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui situasi wilayah kerusuhan, kronologi kerusuhan, dan upaya penanganan yang dilakukan oleh pihak terkait. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian sejarah dengan empat tahapan, yaitu heuristik, verifikasi, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kerusuhan sosial 12 Januari 2002 di Sidoarjo dipicu oleh pembunuhan seorang warga Desa Durungbedug sebagai aksi balas dendam atas pembunuhan yang terjadi pada 13 Desember 2001. Pembunuhan tersebut memicu kemarahan warga yang kemudian berkembang menjadi aksi kerusuhan hingga mengakibatkan kerusakan pada tujuh rumah warga asal Madura di Desa Tenggulunan dan Sepande. Upaya penanganan dilakukan melalui pengamanan wilayah kerusuhan, penegakan hukum oleh aparat kepolisian, serta upaya perdamaian yang melibatkan tokoh masyarakat.

This study examines the January 12, 2002 social riots that occurred in Tenggulunan and Sepande Villages, Candi Subdistrict, Sidoarjo Regency. The purpose of this study is to examine the situation of the riot-affected areas, the cronology of the riots, and the response efforts undertaken by relevant authorities. This study employs the historical reserch method, which consist of four stages, heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results show that the Januari 12, 2002 social riots in Sidoarjo were triggered by the murder of a resident of Durungbedug Village as an act of revenge for a murder that occured on December 13, 2001. The murder sparked public anger, wich later escalated into riots and resulted in damage to seven houses belonging to Madurese residents in Tenggulunan and Sepande villages. The response efforts were carried out through securing the riot-affected areas, law enforcement by the police, and peacebuilding efforts involving community leaders.
