Bomb City merupakan film karya James Brooks dan Sheldon R. Chick yang merepresentasikan kekerasan terhadap kelompok marjinal. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis genre milik Jane Stokes sebagai pisau bedah dalam menganalisa konvensi genre dan interpretasi makna dalam film. Teknik pengambilan data pada penelitian ini menggunakan instrumen yang telah disiapkan, guna memperoleh informasi data yang telah disiapkan. Peneliti mengumpulkan data dengan menonton film Bomb City dan memperhatikan setiap scnene untuk memahami dan mendeskripsikan karakteristik yang sesuai dengan skema dasar genre. Hasil temuan data dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa representasi dan konvensi genre dalam film Bomb City berdasarkan analisa 6 konvensi genre milik Jane Stokes yaitu: Pertama, setting. Menunjukkan setting waktu siang dan malam. Setting suasana: menegangkan, mencekam, emosional, persahabatan, dan mengharukan. Setting tempat: Gedung kosong, rumah orangtua Brian, penjara, parkiran, dan ruang persidangan. Kedua, lokasi. Menunjukkan lokasi Indoor dan Oudoor(ruang tertutup dan ruang terbuka). Ketiga, karakter. Yaitu: BrianDeneke, CodyCates, King, Jade, Jason, dan Oles. Keempat, Ideologi dan Makna Pesan. Kelima, plot. Dengan pola non-linier (foreshadowing atau alur maju-mundur). Keenam, struktur naratif. Dengan struktur babak tiga tahap yaitu permulaan, pertengahan dan penutupan. Di mana pada masing masing konvensi merepresentasikan realitas yang ada di kehidupan masyarakat diantaranya: kesenjangan sosial, dan ketidakadilan. Dari beberapa hal tersebut, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa film sebagai media penyampai pesan secara massal dapat merepresentasikan realita sosial yang kerap kali terjadi di kehidupan masyarakat.
Bomb City is a film by James Brooks and Sheldon R. Chick which represents violence against marginalized groups. This study uses Jane Stokes genre analysis method as a scalpel in analyzing genre conventions and interpretations of meaning in films. Data collection techniques in this study used instruments that had been prepared, in order to obtain information on the data that had been prepared. Researchers collected data by watching the Bomb City film and paying attention to each scene to understand and describe what was in accordance with the basic scheme of the genre. The findings of the data from this study indicate that the representation and genre of convention in the film Bomb City is based on the analysis of Jane Stokes' 6 convention genres, namely First, setting. Shows the day and night time settings. Atmosphere settings: tense, gripping, emotional, friendship, and touching. Place setting: Empty building, Brian parents house, prison, parking lot, and courtroom. Second, location. Shows the location of the Indoor and Oudoor (enclosed space and open space). Third, character. Namely Brian Deneke, Cody Cates, King, Jade, Jason, and Oles. Fourth, ideology and message meaning. Fifth, plot. With a non-linear pattern (foreshadowing or back and forth grooves). Sixth, narrative structure. With a three-stage stage structure, namely the beginning, middle and closing. Where in each convention that represents the reality that exists in people lives that represents: social claims and injustice. From these things, the researcher concluded that films as a medium for conveying mass messages can represent social realities that often occur in peoples lives.
