This study aims to describe how the teaching innovation of hadrah art developed by the Al-Banjari Mizanul Mahabbah Community in Kalitengah village, Tanggulangin, Sidoarjo Regency, contributes to the process of modernization without abandoning traditional and religious values. The main focus of this research is to explore the community’s strategies in utilizing digital media as a promotional tool, implementing adaptive teaching methods suitable for younger generations, and managing social dynamics to sustain the community’s existence for over a decade. In addition, this study examines both the supporting and inhibiting factors that influence the sustainability of the community's activities within the local society.
This research employs a qualitative approach under a phenomenological method, using data collection techniques such as participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Interviews were conducted with the community’s mentor and active members of the Al-Banjari group. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. To ensure the validity of the findings, source and method triangulation techniques were applied, allowing for the verification of data from various perspectives. The phenomenological approach in this study was chosen to gain an in depth understanding of the subjective experiences of community members in carrying out hadrah art activities as well as how they interpret innovation amid social and technological changes. Participatory observation was conducted directly by attending Al-Banjari’s training sessions and perfomances providing a concrete illustration of the community’s internal dynamics and their interaction with the surrounding social environtment. In depth interview were employed to explore personal narratives, perceptions, and critical perspectives from both the mentor and members regarding the process of transformation, the challenges ecountered and the adaptation strategies implemented by the community.
The results of this study indicate that the Al-Banjari Mizanul Mahabbah Community has successfully implemented innovations through the use of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube as tools for religious outreach (syiar) and training. The development of flexible training models that are responsive to member characteristics also contributes to the effectiveness of their programs, Flexible and responsive training tailored to the members’ characteristics means that the practice sessions are not carried out rigidly, but are instead adapted to the conditions, schedules, and learning styles of each individual. This allows every member to participate in the hadrah teaching process according to their own abilities and comfort levels, without feeling pressured or left behind. Supporting factors include strong community engagement, consistent mentoring structures, and collaborative networks. The main challenge lies in public resistance, particularly due to noise concerns during evening practice sessions. This study recommends the development of a more systematic communication strategy between the community and local residents, as well as the enhancement of professional digital platforms to strengthen the dissemination of religious culture on a broader scale.
