Families and schools are institutions that play an
important role in disseminating values and norms in the student learning
process. Moreover, the change in the learning system from offline to online
poses challenges for families and schools regarding the cultivation of student
character. The facts show that it is not uncommon for social changes that occur
suddenly to affect the character of students. Therefore, families and schools
have a strategic role to continue to carry out character cultivation during
learning during the pandemic.
The long-term goal of this research is to contribute
ideas in the world of education regarding the urgency of planting students'
social characters during the pandemic and the short-term goal is to analyze the
problems and strategies of families and schools in inculcating students' social
characters during learning during the pandemic. The research method used is
qualitative. The research subjects are parents, teachers, and principals as
actors who socialize the value of the social character to students. Data were
collected using in-depth interviews, observations, and documents. The data were
analyzed using Miles & Huberman data analysis, namely data reduction, data
presentation, and concluding the Socialization Theory of Peter L. Berger and
Thomas Luckman (1990).
The results showed that family problems stem from
parental knowledge in transmitting knowledge to children during the learning
process, while school problems stem from school unpreparedness in implementing
social characters during distance learning. The strategy used by the family
stems from the selection of parental socialization patterns for children and
parental involvement during the distance learning process. Meanwhile, the
strategy used by the school comes from integrating character in learning
activities and optimizing social capital in the school environment.
Theoretically, the socialization process goes hand in
hand, that is, both the family and the school experience a process of
internalization, objectification, and externalization simultaneously. However,
this socialization theory has not covered other socialization processes such as
the involvement of technology in socializing characters. This appears in this
study because not all primary socialization agents can transmit knowledge to
children. In addition, this theory
also has not confirmed socialization
agents that persistence in every process is important to show the consistency
of actors in acting. Therefore, the addition of a tertiary socialization
process in the form of technological involvement is important to be able to
cover all forms of the socialization process of students' social characters
during learning during the pandemic.
