This research is about the effect of the storytelling method using big book media in improving the ability to read two syllables in children aged 5-6 years at Pertiwi V Sugihwaras Kindergarten, Prambon, Nganjuk. The background of this study is based on initial observations which show that the reading ability of early childhood in kindergarten is not as expected, given the importance of language development as the basis for communication and social interaction.
The research method used was quantitative with a Quasi Experimental Design approach and a one group pretest-posttest design. The research sample consisted of 20 group B children selected from a larger population. Data collection was done through pretest to measure initial reading ability and posttest after treatment. The research instrument was an observation sheet with indicators that had been validated and tested for reliability. The data collected were then analyzed using the Mann Whitney U Test test to determine the significant difference between reading ability before and after treatment. The results of the study indicate that the smallest U is 30 and the U table with α = 5% is 35. It can be concluded that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. This means that there is a significant difference between the control group and the experimental group after receiving the treatment of reading bigbook story activities on the early reading ability of two-syllable words in children aged 5-6 years.
This finding indicates that the storytelling method with big book media has an influence in improving the ability to read two syllables in early childhood. This study suggests that educators should more often implement the storytelling method with interesting media such as big books in learning to increase children's interest in reading. In addition, it is also recommended to involve parents in the learning process at home to support children's reading development in a sustainable manner. Future research can be conducted by involving more diverse samples and locations, as well as exploring other storytelling methods and learning media to enrich the treasure of effective learning methods for early childhood.
