Reading comprehension
and learning motivation remain major challenges in elementary language
education, particularly in Grade IV. Students’ limited understanding of texts
and low enthusiasm in learning indicate the need for a more adaptive and
engaging instructional approach. This study aims to improve students’ reading
comprehension skills and learning motivation through the implementation of a
differentiated instruction model assisted by picture storybooks. This research
is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted at UPT SDN 115 Benjeng Gresik,
involving 20 fourth-grade students as subjects. The study was carried out in
two cycles, each consisting of two meetings. Data collection techniques included
observation, interviews, questionnaires, and reading comprehension tests.
Instruments used were observation sheets, interview guidelines, learning
motivation questionnaires, and comprehension test items. The data were analyzed
both qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed an increase in the
average score from 52.65 in the pre-action stage to 74.78 in the second meeting
of Cycle II. Additionally, students’ motivation improved, as evidenced by their
increased participation in asking questions, engaging in discussions, and
showing interest in reading. The findings conclude that differentiated
instruction supported by picture storybooks is effective in enhancing both
reading comprehension and learning motivation. It is recommended that teachers
adopt this strategy as an alternative, enjoyable, and student-centered approach
in Indonesian language instruction.
