Fear of The Monster: The Uncanny in Lovecraft's "Whisperer in the Darkness" (1930) & "At the Mountain of Madness" 1931 

People have an uncanny experience when they come across events or situations that make them feel unpleasant, horrific, or terrifying. This study focused on the uncanny in H. P. Lovecraft's "Whisperer in the Darkness" (1930) and "At the Mountain of Madness" (1931). This research examined and compared what makes these two Lovecraft’s short stories were unpleasant to readers using Sigmund Freud's psychological concept of "the uncanny." The study found that the uncanny appeals to readers in a number of ways. They are rudimentary surmounted beliefs that have been ingrained in the character's mentality for a long time and are bolstered by the monstrosity's appearance. It is centered on both the monster's spectacular physical appearance and the protagonists' insanity or dread as a result of their unconsciousness when they confront the beast. The feeling of insanity validates Freud's beliefs on repressed memories in the unconscious that arise as a psychic defense mechanism As a result, their reality is shattered, and the characters are oblivious of the state of the object.
