Magical Realism in Leslye Walton's The strange and Beautiful Sorowws of Ava Lavender

Artikel ini menganalisis The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender (2014) karya Leslye Walton. Novel ini adalah karya sastra terkenal dalam fantasi fiksi yang mengandung fenomena magis berpadu dengan hal-hal nyata. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk menemukan lima karakteristik dari magical realism dalam cerita dan  mengkaji fenomena magis yang ada dalam cerita. Rumusan masalah pada penelitian ini yaitu: “Bagaimana magical realism disajikan dalam The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of AvaLavender oleh Leslye walton?”. Analisis dari penelitian ini menggunakan metode literary studies dan teori lima karakteristik magical realism dari Wendy B. Faris. Hasil dari penelitian ini menemukan unsur-unsur karakteristik magis yang dialami tokoh utama, Ava dan juga orang-orang disekitar Pinnacle Lane. Karakteristik tersebut terjadi di dunia nyata dan merupakan perpaduan dari fenomena magis.

This paper analyzes magical realism in Leslye Walton’s The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender (2014). This novel is well-known literary works in fantasy fiction that contain magical mixed with realistic phenomena. The purpose of this study is to find five characteristic of magical realism in the story and examine the magical phenomena that exist in the story. The research question of this study is: "How is magical realism presented in Leslye Walton's The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender. Analysis of this study used literary studies method and Wendy B. Faris’ five characteristic of magical realism theory. The results of this study found elements of magical characteristics experienced by the main character, Ava, and also people around Pinnacle Lane. These characteristics occur in the real world and are a blend of magical phenomena.
