Keberadaan golongan elite Eropa di Surabaya telah berpengaruh pada kehidupan sosial budaya masyarakat semasa kolonial. Golongan elite Eropa sendiri biasa menghabiskan waktu untuk berlibur setelah bekerja maupun di hari libur dengan bepergian ke berbagai tempat hiburan seperti hotel, restoran, bioskop, dan juga berkumpul bersama di gedung khusus yang disebut dengan soos. Soos sendiri sebagai tempat golongan elite Eropa berkumpul untuk menghabiskan waktu dengan berpesta, acara makan malam, bermain kartu ataupun billiard, dan berbagai aktivitas yang menunjukkan gaya hidup ala Barat. Metode penelitian yang digunakan ada empat tahapan yakni heuristik, kritik sumber, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan keberadaan komunitas elite Eropa mengubah tatanan stratifikasi sosial masyarakat Surabaya akibat adanya segregasi etnis yang dijalankan oleh pemerintah kolonial sebagai salah satu bentuk dominasi kekuasaan di Hindia Belanda. Beberapa komunitas elite Eropa yang terkenal di Surabaya sepanjang tahun 1870-1942 yakni ada Concordia Societeit, Marine-Modderlust, De Club, Deutscher Verein, dan Simpangsche Societeit.

The presence of the European elite in Surabaya had an impact on the social and cultural life of the community during the colonial period. The European elite themselves usually spent their time vacationing after work or on holidays by traveling to various entertainment venues such as hotels, restaurants, cinemas, and also gathering together in a special building called a soos. Soos served as a gathering place for the European elite to spend time partying, having dinner, playing cards or billiards, and engaging in various activities that reflected a Western lifestyle. The research methodology used consisted of four stages: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this research indicate that the presence of the European elite community altered the social stratification structure of Surabaya society due to ethnic segregation implemented by the colonial government as one form of power dominance in the Dutch East Indies. Some well-known European elite communities in Surabaya from 1870 to 1942 include Concordia Societeit, Marine-Modderlust, De Club, Deutscher Verein, and Simpangsche Societeit.
