Sistem pengaturan lampu lalu lintas konvensional yang bersifat statis kurang mampu mengakomodasi fluktuasi volume kendaraan secara real-time, sehingga pendekatan adaptif berbasis reinforcement learning menjadi alternatif yang banyak dikembangkan. Performa sistem semacam ini ditentukan oleh dua komponen utama, yaitu kualitas sensor visi komputer yang mendeteksi kondisi lalu lintas dan arsitektur jaringan saraf yang memetakan kondisi tersebut menjadi keputusan kontrol. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis pengaruh kedua komponen tersebut melalui desain eksperimen faktorial 2×2, yang mengombinasikan dua sensor deteksi objek (YOLOv8 dan Faster R-CNN ResNet-50) dengan dua arsitektur Deep Q-Network (DQN Baseline dan DQN Attention dengan Squeeze-and-Excitation Block). Data lalu lintas dikumpulkan dari rekaman CCTV pada studi kasus persimpangan T di Surabaya, kemudian diproses menjadi representasi Discrete Traffic State Encoding (DTSE) berukuran 4×20×3 sebagai input bagi model. Evaluasi dilakukan pada tiga kondisi waktu (pagi, siang, dan malam) menggunakan tiga metrik, yaitu average queue length, average reward, dan total departed. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kualitas sensor memberikan pengaruh yang menentukan terhadap performa sistem; Faster R-CNN (recall 96,21%) menghasilkan total departed rata-rata 24% lebih tinggi dibandingkan YOLOv8 (recall 67,96%). Keterbatasan deteksi pada YOLOv8 menyebabkan kedua varian DQN mengalami konvergensi kebijakan prematur (premature policy convergence), di mana DQN Baseline dan DQN Attention menghasilkan metrik evaluasi yang identik meskipun arsitekturnya berbeda. Analisis lebih lanjut terhadap urutan aksi menunjukkan bahwa agen dengan sensor Faster R-CNN menghasilkan variasi durasi fase yang jauh lebih besar (7 hingga 16 detik) dibandingkan YOLOv8 yang hampir seluruhnya seragam (11 detik), meskipun sumber variasi ini belum sepenuhnya terkonfirmasi berasal dari respons langsung terhadap kepadatan lalu lintas. Kombinasi DQN Attention dengan sensor Faster R-CNN menghasilkan performa terbaik secara keseluruhan di antara keempat kombinasi yang diuji, sehingga penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa kualitas representasi state yang disuplai sensor visi komputer berfungsi sebagai penentu batas atas kinerja arsitektur reinforcement learning pada sistem kendali lalu lintas adaptif.

Conventional static traffic light systems are unable to accommodate real-time fluctuations in vehicle volume, making adaptive control approaches based on reinforcement learning an increasingly explored alternative. The performance of such systems is determined by two primary components: the quality of the computer vision sensor used to detect traffic conditions and the neural network architecture that maps these conditions into control decisions. This study aims to analyze the influence of both components through a 2×2 factorial experimental design, combining two object detection sensors (YOLOv8 and Faster R-CNN ResNet-50) with two Deep Q-Network architectures (DQN Baseline and DQN Attention with a Squeeze-and-Excitation Block). Traffic data were collected from CCTV recordings at a T-intersection case study in Surabaya and processed into a Discrete Traffic State Encoding (DTSE) representation of size 4×20×3 as model input. Evaluation was conducted across three time conditions (morning, afternoon, and night) using three metrics: average queue length, average reward, and total departed. The results show that sensor quality has a decisive influence on system performance; Faster R-CNN (96.21% recall) achieved an average total departed 24% higher than YOLOv8 (67.96% recall). The detection limitations of YOLOv8 caused both DQN variants to experience premature policy convergence, where DQN Baseline and DQN Attention produced identical evaluation metrics despite their architectural differences. Further analysis of the action sequences revealed that agents using the Faster R-CNN sensor produced substantially greater variation in phase duration (7 to 16 seconds) compared to YOLOv8, which remained nearly uniform at 11 seconds, although the source of this variation could not be fully confirmed as a direct response to traffic density. The combination of DQN Attention with the Faster R-CNN sensor achieved the best overall performance among the four tested combinations, demonstrating that the quality of state representation supplied by the computer vision sensor functions as the upper bound determinant of reinforcement learning architecture performance in adaptive traffic control systems.
