Budaya merupakan identitas seseorang. Peneliti menyadari tempat tinggal peneliti yaitu di Kabupaten Gresik. Peneliti juga menyadari minat peneliti dalam bidang melukis. Budaya lokal di bidang melukis dari Gresik yang paling terkenal yaitu Damar Kurung. Peneliti menggali kedekatan peneliti dengan Damar Kurung, mulai dari kesan peneliti melihat Damar Kurung di sepanjang jalan Kabupaten Gresik hingga pengalaman diri peneliti dengan Damar Kurung. Peneliti menggali pengalaman peneliti pada saat membuat Damar Kurung di usia 9 tahun. Dari pengalaman tersebut ditemukan konsep Matematika seperti satuan pengukuran panjang dan lebar, perkalian, pembagian, bangun datar, dan bangun ruang. Dari refleksi tersebut, peneliti penasaran apakah memungkinkan adanya konsep Matematika lain dalam Damar Kurung? Peneliti tertarik untuk melanjutkan penelitian. Penelitian yang dilakukan ini bertujuan mengetahui pengalaman peneliti untuk menggali konsep Matematika saat terlibat dalam proses pembuatan karya seni Damar Kurung dan mengetahui pendapat stake holder terkait mengenai hasil eksplorasi yang ditemukan.
Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif berjenis transformatif. Penelitian transformatif menggunakan desain multi-paradigmatic yang terdiri dari postmodernism, criticalism, dan interpretivism. Subjek penelitian ini adalah diri peneliti, pengrajin Damar Kurung, Koordinator Dinas Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata, Koordinator Dinas Pendidikan, dan para guru kelas yang mengajar Matematika di salah satu sekolah dasar negeri di Kabupaten Gresik. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan yaitu writing critical auto|ethnography inquiry untuk mengumpulkan data autoethnography pengalaman masa lalu peneliti dan auto|ethnography pengalaman peneliti dengan pengrajin Damar Kurung, writing as inquiry untuk mengumpulkan data observasi dan wawancara studi auto|ethnography proses pembuatan Damar Kurung, postmodern interviews untuk mengumpulkan data hasil wawancara stake holder terkait, serta kajian dokumen dan kepustakaan.
Hasil penelitian ini yaitu ditemukannya konsep Matematika dalam proses pembuatan Damar Kurung. Berdasarkan cerita pengalaman masa lalu peneliti, konsep yang ditemukan yaitu bilangan cacah, operasi bilangan, bangun datar, bangun ruang, kongruensi, simetri lipat, luas bangun datar, satuan pengukuran, garis, dan sudut. Sedangkan, pada pengalaman peneliti bersama pengrajin melalui tahap persiapan atau pra produksi ditemukan konsep bilangan cacah, operasi bilangan, pecahan, satuan pengukuran, bangun datar dan bangun ruang, serta penyajian data. Pada tahap produksi terdapat operasi bilangan, perbandingan, satuan pengukuran, titik, garis, sudut, simetri lipat, pencerminan, bangun datar, serta bangun ruang. Pada tahap penyelesaian ada satuan pengukuran dan bangun ruang. Dan konsep pada tahap pasca produksi yaitu bilangan cacah, operasi bilangan, pecahan, penyajian data, dan mean. Menurut stake holder terkait dan dari hasil analisis, hasil penelitian ini dapat dijadikan sebagai sebuah alternatif pembelajaran Matematika di sekolah dasar, khususnya bagi peserta didik kelas I sampai IV di wilayah Gresik.

Culture is a person's identity. The researcher was aware of the researcher’s residence which is in Gresik Regency. The researcher was also aware of her passion for painting. The most famous painting as a local culture in Gresik is called Damar Kurung. Thus, the researcher explored her closeness to Damar Kurung, starting from her impression when looking at Damar Kurung along Gresik Regency road to her experiences with Damar Kurung. The researcher explored the experience when making Damar Kurung at the age of 9 years old. From this exploration, the researcher found mathematical concepts such as units of length and width measurement, multiplication, division, two- and three-dimensional figures. From this reflection, the researcher wondered whether it was possible to have other Mathematical concepts in Damar Kurung? The researcher was interested in continuing the research. The research aims were exposing the researcher’s experience in exploring mathematical concepts during the process of making Damar Kurung and knowing the opinions of relevant stakeholders regarding the results of the exploration.
This research is transformative qualitative research. Transformative research uses a multi-paradigmatic design consisting of postmodernism, criticalism, and interpretivism. The subjects of this study were the researcher, Damar Kurung craftsmen, Coordinator of the Culture and Tourism Office, Coordinator of the Education Office, and classroom teachers who have been teaching mathematics at an elementary state school in Gresik. The data collection techniques were writing critical auto|ethnography inquiry to collect autoethnography data from the researcher’s past experiences and auto|ethnography experiences of the researcher with Damar Kurung craftsmen, writing as inquiry to collect observation data and auto|ethnographic interview to make Damar Kurung, postmodern interviews to collect data in interview with relevant stakeholder, as well as document and library studies.
The results of this study were the discovery of the mathematical concepts in the process of making Damar Kurung. Based on the researcher’s past experiences, the concepts found were whole numbers, number operations, two- and three-dimensional figures, congruence, symmetry, areas of two-dimensional figures, units of measurement, lines, and angles. Whilst, the researcher experience with craftsmen through the preparatory or pre-production stages it was found the concepts of whole numbers, operations of numbers, fractions, units of measurement two- and three-dimensional figures, and presenting data. At the production stage, there were number operations, comparisons, units of measurement, points, lines, angles, folding symmetry, mirroring, measurement, two- and three-dimensional figures. At the completion stage there were units of measurement and three-dimensional figures. Lastly, the concepts in the post-production stage were whole numbers, operations of numbers, fractions, presentation of data, and mean. According to relevant stakeholders and the results of the analysis, the findings of this study can be used as an alternative for learning mathematics in elementary school, especially for grade I to IV students in Gresik area.
