HEALTHY LIFESTYLE OF NUTRITION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS IN STATE UNIVERSITY OF SURABAYA BEFORE AND DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Previous studies have shown differences in the application of healthy lifestyle before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Indonesia, study related to this topic is still limited, especially healthy lifestyles in college students. This study aimed to determine differences in healthy lifestyles in terms of: eating patterns, sleep quality, smoking habits, and physical activity in Nutrition Department students of Surabaya State University (UNESA) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a descriptive study with a cross sectional approach. Data collected in February-March 2021 by online with 141 samples. Data analysed with descriptive statistics.
Differences in eating patterns were seen before the pandemic, 65.2% of respondents bought food at food stalls/restaurants, and during the pandemic 91.5% cooked their food at home. The reduction in fast food consumption also increased to 1-2 times/week (92.2%) and food prepared by their mother (73.8%). Respondents had sleep difficulty within 30 minutes 3x in 1 week, increased from before (14.2%) and during the pandemic (26.2%). Sleep duration increased as >8 hours/day, from 0.7% to 15.6% during the pandemic. Smoking habits in 4 respondents were still the same as before the pandemic, even 1 of them increased. Respondents still skipped exercise, even slightly increased during the pandemic (36.9% to 38.3%).
Respondents’ healthy lifestyle was better in made food at home than buying, reduced consumption of fast food, and worse in eating frequency, skipped meals, sleep duration, sleep difficulty, smoking habits, and physical activity than before the COVID-19 pandemic.
