The research
is carried out in order to know the influence of Community of Inquiry learning
model (1) on the collaborative skill conducted in the scientific and critical
reading class of the English Department students of Muhammadiyah University
Surabaya, (2) on metacognitive skill conducted in the scientific and critical
reading class of the English Department students of Muhammadiyah University
Surabaya, and (3) on learning outcome conducted in the scientific and critical
reading class of the English Department students of Muhammadiyah University
Surabaya conducted in scientific and critical reading class.
The research design in this
study is a quasi-experiment because this research used a control class which
didn’t fully control some variables such as the time of learning activities,
interest, and student motivation that influences the experiment implementation.
And then the quasi-experiment was used to see or to find out the influence of
the independent variable on the dependent ones. After that, the class is
divided into two classes; the first group of 30 students was treated with
conventional learning and the second group of 30 students was treated with the
community of inquiry. The data collection was applied by using a questionnaire,
observation sheets, and tests.
The result
of this research shows that Community of Inquiry significantly influences (1) the collaborative skill, (2) metacognitive skill, and (3)
the learning outcome. The use of the CoI Learning model in online learning
in scientific and Critical Reading courses as one of the language skills has
worked well. And at the same time, the collaborative skills and metacognitive
skills of English Language Education Study Program students at the University
of Muhammadiyah Surabaya can be improved.
