SPOKEN WORD POETRY AS A MEDIUM FOR SOCIAL ACTIVISM

Umumnya berpuisi kerap dikaitkan sebagai sebuah medium yang bersifat katarsis dan hanya untuk para manusia senja. Padahal, jenis puisi bukan hanya satu melainkan terdapat berbagai jenis puisi salah satunya adalah spoken word poetry dimana puisi jenis ini juga memiliki keunikan yang sama dengan poetry slam. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa spoken word poetry ternyata mempunyai peran dalam hal aktivisme sosial dan tidak hanya sebagai sebuah katarsis. Setelah dipelajari lebih lanjut, ternyata spoken word poetry memiliki aktivisme sosial yang sejalan dengan Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) karena sesuai dengan tagline yang berbunyi No One Left Behind dan mengutamakan inklusifitas. Oleh karena itu, artikel ini memilah empat spoken word poetry yang mewakili isu kesehatan mental, rasisme, dan gender dan setiap video diambil telah dilihat oleh lebih dari satu juta penonton melalui kanal YouTube. Hasilnya, spoken word poetry ternyata mampu menjadi salah satu media untuk mendukung aktivisme sosial karena menyediakan ruang untuk berefleksi, mempromosikan, serta mengedukasi penonton. Tidak hanya sampai disitu saja, ternyata jenis puisi spoken word poetry juga mampu untuk membuka diskusi terlebih pada tiga isu tadi yang berkaitan dengan Sustainable Development Goals agar dapat tercapai masyarakat yang inklusif.

Poetry, in general, is often associated as a catharsis that brings the idea that poetry is only for individual who wants to share their emotions through writing. However, there are many types of poetry and one of them is spoken word poetry that shares some commons with a poetry slam. This study reveals that spoken word poetry has its role in social activism activities and not limited to catharsis purpose only. Moreover, the social activism that reflected from spoken word poetry works well with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the global movement using a tagline namely No One Left Behind to highlight inclusivity. Hence, this article has chosen four spoken word poetry performances that already gained up to one million views from YouTube channels specifically those that represented mental health, racism, and gender issue. The result of this study shows that spoken word poetry able to become one of the social activism tools by continuing to promote, reflect, educate its audience. But not only stop to that, but spoken word poetry also tries to open up a discussion related to those specific issues related to sustainable development goals to achieve an inclusive society.
