This research aims to criticize and provide a new perspective on the Japanese collocation mapping that has existed so far and to determine the level of students' understanding of the collocations that have been mapped based on new indicators. In this qualitative research approach, the data collection method used was literature study, Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I-II Edition 2 and Minna no Nihongo Chukyu I-II Textbooks and used tests and interviews to determine the level of students' understanding of collocations.
The research results for the 1st research focus are the mapping of noun-verb structured collocations into 4 (four) categories, namely weakly structured free combination collocations, strong structured free combination collocations, weakly structured idiom category collocations and strong structured idiom category collocations using 7 (seven ) indicators, namely 1) the sequence of meanings found in the dictionary (Gensen, Kokugo Jiten), 2) the meaning of collocations in sentences (clear/implied/none), 3) the use of nouns that contain a field of meaning, 4) free replacement of nouns , 5) Various formation structures, 6) Insertion of adverbs, 7) Sometimes it is connected to thinking concepts / cultural elements and habits of the language-speaking community. Meanwhile, for research focus (2), the researcher only measured the level of students' understanding of collocations for 3 (three) categories of collocations, namely free combination collocations with a weak structure, free combination collocations with a strong structure, and collocations in the weakly structured idiom category only. This is because the collocation categories of strong structured idioms are not listed in the textbooks that students use, so it was decided to only measure 3 (three) categories. The results of the research show that the level of Japanese language learners' understanding of each collocation is 1) collocations in the weakly structured free combination category show a figure of 40%, 2) collocations in the strong structured free combination category are only around 30% and 3) collocations in the weakly structured idiom category are still below the level. 30%. So it can be concluded that the level of understanding of Japanese language learners regarding collocations is still very low.
