Keberadaan dan peranan musik pada pertunjukan teater sangatlah penting, sehingga pementasan teater akan terasa tidak hidup tanpa unsur-unsur musikalitas. Berawal dari gambaran diatas, penulis tertarik melakukan proses kreatif sebagai seorang komposer musik teater. Penulis akan mengkomposisi sebuah iringan teater yang berjudul Bunga Penutup Abad. Bercerita tentang kehidupan Annelies sejak kepergiannya dari Surabaya menuju Belanda, kisah perjalanan Annelies diceritakan lewat surat-surat tulisan Panji Darman kepada Nyai Ontosoroh dan Minke. Surat-surat tersebut memiliki cap pos berbagai negara dan membawa ingatan mereka kembali ke peristiwa Wonokromo. Hingga suatu hari, Annelies meninggal di Belanda. Mengenang perempuan yang dicintai dan mencintainya, Minke membawa lukisan potret Annelies karya sahabatnya, Jean Marais. Lukisan yang harus bisa berkisan tentang abad yang lewat, dan kilat mata tentang harapan mendatang inilah yang bernama Bunga Penutup Abad (Toer, 2016:162).

Dalam membahas fokus karya pada musik teater yang berjudul Bunga Penutup Abad ini tinjauan lebih difokuskan terhadap estetika yang ada dalam komposisi. Dengan metode penciptaan sebagai berikut: (1) Rangsang Awal, dan (2) Konsep Penciptaan. Jenis karya yang disajikan pada karya musik Bunga Penutup Abad ini adalah jenis karya musik programatik yang ditujukan untuk mengiringi drama dengan judul yang sama.
