STUDENTS’ EXPERIENCES IN SCRIPTED AND UNSCRIPTED ROLE PLAYING IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Penelitian ini berkaitan dengan pengalaman siswa dalam bermain peran scripted (dengan naskah) dan unscripted (tanpa naskah) yang memiliki dua pertanyaan penelitihan utama. Yang pertama adalah untuk bagaimana siswa melaksanakan scripted dan unscripted role play?. Yang kedua adalah untuk yang mana mode role play yang lebih baik, scripted atau unscripted dalam membantu siswa mengembangkan kompetensi berbicara mereka. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMP sebagai partisipan dan mengambil dua kelas dari kelas tujuh dengan masing-masing kelas tiga puluh empat siswa. Mix method dimana metode kualitatif dan kuantitatif dipilih untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Metode kualitatif menggunakan instrumen observasi dan angket. Metode kuantitatif menggunakan SPSS untuk membantu peneliti mendapatkan hasil akurasi. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan melakukan observasi, pemberian angket, dan pengambilan skor kinerja siswa. Berdasarkan temuan, siswa melakukan dengan baik dalam mempersiapkan role play seperti, menyusun kalimat dan memahami kartu role play. Kemudian, mereka merasa kesulitan, malu, dan gugup selama pertunjukan role play. Dalam evaluasi bermain peran, siswa mendapatkan beberapa dampak positif seperti penambahan kosa kata, meningkatkan kepercayaan diri, pengucapan, dan kreativitas. Selain itu, hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa yang melakukan role play tanpa naskah mendapat nilai yang lebih baik daripada siswa yang bermain peran dengan naskah. Akhirnya, disimpulkan bahwa siswa melakukannya dengan baik dalam mempersiapkan permainan peran dengan naskah dan tanpa naskah. Namun, mereka menghadapi beberapa kesulitan selama pertunjukan seperti, malu, gugup, salah mengucapkan, dll. Di sisi lain, siswa memiliki beberapa dampak positif setelah melakukan role play. Disimpulkan juga bahwa permainan peran tanpa naskah lebih baik daripada permainan peran dengan naskah dalam membantu kemampuan berbicara siswa.
This study is concerned with students‟ experiences in scripted and unscripted role playing that has two main reseach questions. The first one is How do the students apply scripted and unscripted role play?. The second one is Which mode of role play, scripted or unscripted, better assist them to develop speaking competence?. This research was conducted in junior high school as the participant and took two classes of seventh grades with each class being thirty four students. Mix method which qualitative and quantitative method was chosen to solve the research question. The qualitative method used the observation and questionnaire as the instrument. The quantitative method used SPSS to help researchers get the accuracy result. The data collection was done by doing observation, giving questionnaires, and taking students' performance scores. Based on the finding, students were doing well in preparing the role play such as, building sentences and understanding the role play card. Then, they felt difficult, embarrassed, and nervous during the role play performance. In evaluating role play, students got some positive impact such as adding vocabulary, improving self-confidence, pronunciation, and creativity. Also, the result showed the students who had unscripted role play got better scores than students who had scripted role play. Finally, it concluded that students were doing well in preparing scripted and unscripted role play. However, they face some difficulties during the performance like, embarrassed, nervous, mispronouncing, etc. On the other hand, students had some positive impact after doing role play. It also concluded that unscripted role play is better than scripted role play in assisting students speaking competence.
