Justice Wargrave's Neurotic Needs and Aggressive Behavior in Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None

This research was conducted using a psychological approach to find out what neurotic needs have by and describe the character Justice Wargrave in Agatha Christie's novel, And Then There Were None, using the neurotic theory proposed by Karen Horney. In addition to discovering Wargrave's neurotic needs, this study also examined Wargrave's aggressive behavior. The analysis process was carried out also to better understand Wargrave's aggressive behavior since childhood and the relationship between Wargrave's neurotic needs and aggressive behavior. Through the research conducted, it can be concluded that Wargrave's character has three neurotic needs that dominate his character, namely: (1) The neurotic need for power; (2) The neurotic need to exploit others and by hook or crook get the better of them; and (3) The neurotic need for social recognition or prestige, where these three neurotic needs fall into one neurotic trend category, moving against people or aggression. And the result of the analysis proved that Wargrave’s neurotic needs affect, or rather, became the fuel for his aggression that he had since childhood.
