Penelitian ini dilakukan berdasarkan permasalahan literasi di SMP Labschool Unesa Ketintang Surabaya. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan: 1) proses pengembangan buku berjenjang bertema inspiratif, 2) keterbacaan buku berjenjang bertema inspiratif, 3) kualitas produk buku berjenjang bertema inspiratif, dan 4) kualitas penggunaan buku berjenjang bertema inspiratif yang sesuai untuk siswa SMP.
Penelitian pengembangan ini menggunakan model pengembangan Borg dan Gall yang terdiri atas delapan tahap, yaitu (1) penelitian potensi dan masalah, (2) pengumpulan data, (3) desain produk, (4) validasi produk, (5) revisi produk, (6) uji coba produk, (7) revisi produk, (8) uji pelaksanaan lapangan. Penelitian ini menghasilkan tiga buku berjenjang, yakni pada jenjang E, jenjang F, dan jenjang G. Buku berjenjang diuji coba berdasarkan keterbacaan dan uji pelaksanaan pada siswa.
Hasil penelitian ini meliputi: (1) proses pengembangan buku berjenjang menggunakan model Borg dan Gall, (2) keterbacaan buku berjenjang menggunakan formula keterbacaan Grafik Fry. Jenjang E sesuai digunakan untuk kelas 6, 7, dan 8. Jenjang F sesuai digunakan untuk kelas 7, 8, 9, dan 10. Jenjang G sesuai digunakan untuk kelas 8, 9, dan 10. (3) kualitas produk buku berjenjang dilihat dari penilaian dua validator ahli berdasarkan tiga aspek. Aspek isi pada buku jenjang E memiliki persentase 93%, buku jenjang F memiliki persentase 97%, dan buku jenjang G memiliki persentase 97%, sehingga ketiganya memiliki kualitas “sangat layak”. Pada aspek bahasa buku jenjang E memiliki persentase 92,5%, buku jenjang F memiliki persentase 91%, dan buku jenjang G memiliki persentase 97,5%, sehingga ketiganya memiliki kualitas “sangat layak”. Pada aspek grafika buku jenjang E, jenjang F, dan jenjang G memiliki persentase 87,5% sehingga tergolong memiliki kualitas “sangat layak”. (4) kualitas penggunaan buku berjenjang berpengaruh positif. Hasil tes sebelum membaca buku berjenjang lebih rendah dibandingkan sesudah membaca buku berjenjang bertema inspiratif. Pada jenjang E skor siswa mengalami kenaikan sebesar 27, jenjang F mengalami kenaikan nilai sebesar 28,1, sedangkan untuk jenjang G mengalami kenaikan nilai sebesar 26,6. Selain menunjukkan hasil peningkatan yang signifikan, uji coba buku berjenjang ini menunjukkan temuan mengenai karakter siswa. Karakter siswa pada kelas 7 cenderung optimis, sedangkan karakter siswa kelas 8 cenderung pesimis.

This research was carried out based on literacy problems at Laboratorium Unesa Junior High School in Ketintang Surabaya. The purpose of this study is to describe: 1) the process of developing inspirational tiered books, 2) the readability of inspirational tiered books, 3) the quality of the inspirational tiered book product, and 4) the quality of use of inspirational tiered books are suitable for middle school students.
This development research uses the Borg and Gall development model, which consists of eight phases, namely (1) potential and problem research, (2) data acquisition, (3) product design, (4) product validation, (5) product revision, (6)) Product trials, (7) product revisions, (8) field implementation tests. This study found three levels of books, namely level E, level F and level G. The graded book was tested on students based on readability and implementation tests.
The results of this study include: (1) the process of developing tiered books using the Borg and Gall models, (2) readability of tiered books using the Fry Graph readability formula. Level E is suitable for classes 6, 7 and 8. Level F is suitable for classes 7, 8, 9 and 10. Level G is suitable for classes 8, 9 and 10. (3) The quality of the tiered book products results from the evaluation of two expert validators based on three aspects. The content of the E-Level book is 93%, the F-Level book is 97% and the Level G book is 97%, so all three are of "very decent" quality . With regard to language level E, books have a percentage of 92.5%, books of level F have a percentage of 91% and books of level G have a percentage of 97.5%, so that all three are of "very decent" quality. In the graphic aspect of level E, F and G books, it has a percentage of 87.5%, so it is classified as "very decent". (4) The quality of the use of tiered books has a positive effect. Test results before reading a tiered book are lower than after reading a tiered inspirational book. At the E level, the student score increased by 27, the F level by 28.1, and the G level by 26.6. This graded book study shows not only the results of a significant improvement, but also results on the character of the students. The character of 7th grade students tends to be optimistic, while the character of 8th grade students is more pessimistic.
