REPRESENTASI KECERDASAN EMOSI TOKOH UTAMA PADA NOVEL HELEN DAN SUKANTA KARYA PIDI BAIQ: TEORI DANIEL GOLEMAN
REPRESENTATION OF THE MAIN CHARACTER'S EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE NOVEL HELEN AND SUKANTA BY PIDI BAIQ: DANIEL GOLEMAN'S THEORY
Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kecerdasan emosinal yang penting untuk dikelola pada kehidupan sehari-hari maupun penggambaran karakter khususnya tokoh utama pada karya sastra. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah merepresentasikan kecerdasan emosional tokoh utama pada novel Helen dan Sukanta karya Pidi Baiq melalui lima aspek menurut teori Daniel Goleman, yakni kesadaran diri, mengelola emosi, motivasi, memahami emosi orang lain (empati), dan keterampilan sosial.
Metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan psikologis sastra. Sumber data penelitian menggunakan novel Helen dan Sukanta karya Pidi Baiq tahun 2019, sedangkan teknik pengumpulkan data melalui metode baca-catat terhadap kutipan, narasi, dialog maupun menolog yang mencerminkan emosi tokoh. Data yang sudah terkumpul dianalisis dengan mengklasifikasi sesuai lima aspek kecerdasan emosi menurut teori Daniel Goleman.
Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa tokoh utama dalam novel Helen dan Sukanta mampu mempresentasikan kecerdasan emosi dalam berbagai situasi termasuk marah, sedih, senang, maupun bingung. Pada aspek kesadaran diri, tokoh mampu mengenali dan memvalidasi emosi yang dirasakan. Mengelola emosi terlihat dalam usaha tokoh utama dalam menahan gejolak emosi meskipun kerap gagal. Aspek motivasi tampak dari dorongan untuk tetap bertahan dalam hubungan dan menghadapi kesulitan. Empati terwujud dalam kepedulian tokoh terhadap emosi orang lain dan mampu mengenali emosi orang lain berdasarkan sinyal tersembunyi. Keterampilan sosial tampak pada kemampuan untuk membangun hubungan meskipun terhalang budaya dan latar belakang.

This research is motivated by the importance of emotional intelligence, which needs to be managed both in everyday life and in the portrayal of characters especially the main character in literary works. The purpose of this study is to represent the emotional intelligence of the main character in the novel Helen dan Sukanta by Pidi Baiq through the five aspects proposed by Daniel Goleman: self-awareness, emotional regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.
The study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a psychological literary approach. The data source is the novel Helen dan Sukanta by Pidi Baiq (2019). Data were collected using the reading and note-taking method, focusing on quotations, narratives, dialogues, and monologues that reflect the character’s emotions. The collected data were then analyzed by classifying them according to the five aspects of emotional intelligence based on Daniel Goleman’s theory.
The results of the study show that the main character in Helen dan Sukanta is able to demonstrate emotional intelligence in various situations, including anger, sadness, happiness, and confusion. In terms of self-awareness, the character can recognize and validate their emotions. Emotional regulation is shown through the main character’s efforts to control emotional turmoil, although not always successfully. The aspect of motivation is reflected in the character’s determination to maintain relationships and face difficulties. Empathy is evident in the character’s concern for others’ emotions and the ability to recognize them through subtle cues. Social skills are manifested in the ability to build relationships despite cultural and background differences.
