Abstrak ID : The shell-and-tube heat exchanger (STHE) is one of the most widely used heat exchangers in industrial applications due to its simple construction and ability to operate under high pressure and temperature conditions. However, the use of conventional segmental baffles often results in a high pressure drop, which reduces thermohydraulic performance. This study aims to investigate the effect of helical baffle angles (19°, 42°, and 45°) and Reynolds numbers (15,000, 30,000, and 45,000) on the thermohydraulic performance of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. The simulations were performed using ANSYS Fluent 2023 R1 with the realizable k-ε turbulence model. The numerical model was validated against the experimental data reported by Kurniawan and Arsana (2017). The evaluated parameters included the Heat Transfer Rate, Wall Heat Flux, temperature distribution, flow velocity distribution, and Pressure Drop. Thermohydraulic performance was assessed using the Thermal-Hydraulic Performance Ratio (THPR), defined as the ratio of the Heat Transfer Rate to the Pressure Drop. The results indicate that increasing the Reynolds number enhances both the Heat Transfer Rate and Pressure Drop for all helical baffle configurations. Based on the THPR evaluation, the 45° helical baffle at a Reynolds number of 15,000 achieved the highest THPR value of 128.55, with a Heat Transfer Rate of 7,164.14 W and a Pressure Drop of 55.73 Pa. This configuration was identified as the optimum design because it provides the best balance between heat transfer capability and hydraulic performance.
