The Relationship between Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and Cyberloafing in First-Year College Students
Perkembangan media sosial di era digital membuat individu semakin terhubung dengan lingkungan sosialnya. Namun, penggunaan media sosial yang tidak bijak dapat memicu perilaku cyberloafing. Fenomena ini banyak dialami mahasiswa tahun pertama yang berada pada fase emerging adulthood, di mana kebutuhan relatedness yang tidak terpenuhi dapat memicu munculnya fear of missing out (FoMO). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji hubungan antara Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) dan Cyberloafing pada mahasiswa tahun pertama Universitas Negeri Surabaya. Penelitian kuantitatif korelasional dengan 231 responden ini menggunakan analisis Pearson melalui JASP 0.95.4 dan menunjukkan hubungan positif signifikan kategori cukup antara fear of missing out (FoMO) dan cyberloafing (r = 0,503; p < .001), sehingga semakin tinggi Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), semakin besar kecenderungan Cyberloafing.
The development of social media in the digital era has made individuals increasingly connected to their social environment. However, unwise use of social media can trigger cyberloafing behavior. This phenomenon is commonly experienced by first-year students who are in the phase of emerging adulthood, where unmet relatedness needs may lead to the emergence of fear of missing out (FoMO). This study aims to examine the relationship between Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and cyberloafing among first-year students at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. This correlational quantitative research involving 231 respondents used Pearson correlation analysis through JASP 0.95.4 and revealed a significant positive relationship with a moderate category between FoMO and cyberloafing (r = 0.503; p < .001), indicating that the higher the FoMO, the greater the tendency to engage in cyberloafing.
