Penerapan Pendekatan Saintifik di Kelas EFL.

The Use of Scientific Approach in the EFL Classes.

        Pendekatan Saintifik (Scientific Approach) adalah salah satu pendekatan yang paling efektif dalam konteks EFL Indonesia yang diterapkan dalam Kurikulum 2013. Ini diadaptasi dari metode pembelajaran sains. Munculnya pendekatan ini diharapkan memiliki kontribusi yang signifikan terhadap kualitas pembelajaran di semua mata pelajaran termasuk Bahasa Inggris. Berkaitan dengan hal ini, perlu untuk menyelidiki bagaimana Pendekatan Saintifik diimplementasikan oleh guru di Kelas EFL. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) menjelaskan bagaimana Pendekatan Saintifik diterapkan di kelas EFL dan (2) tanggapan guru terhadap penerapan Pendekatan Saintifik di kelas EFL. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif-kualitatif dimana data dikumpulkan melalui observasi dan wawancara. Catatan lapangan dikumpulkan selama observasi. Penelitian ini dilakukan di salah satu sekolah menengah pertama di Krian. Subjek yang dipilih adalah salah satu guru Bahasa Inggris di SMP di Krian yang telah menerapkan Pendekatan Saintifik dalam pengajarannya. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa guru telah menerapkan Pendekatan Saintifik untuk mengajar teks recount di Kelas EFL. Lima tahap Pendekatan Saintifik juga dilaksanakan dengan cukup baik, namun, diketahui bahwa siswa masih mengalami kesulitan pada tahap kedua dan terakhir dari Pendekatan Saintifik (yaitu tahap tanya jawab dan komunikasi). Kesulitan yang ditemukan adalah siswa tidak dapat bertanya karena mereka bingung harus bertanya apa. Terkadang mereka juga merasa takut dan tidak percaya diri untuk bertanya. Selain itu, beberapa siswa juga merasa malu ketika mereka diminta untuk menunjukkan hasil tugas mereka pada tahap berkomunikasi. Kemudian, hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa Pendekatan Saintifik mempengaruhi guru sebagai fasilitator dalam proses pembelajaran. Guru juga mendukung bahwa Pendekatan Saintifik mampu memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap bagaimana cara guru memberikan materi kepada siswa. Dengan demikian, guru mengungkapkan bahwa Pendekatan Saintifik dapat menjadi metode yang paling efektif dalam Pengajaran Bahasa Inggris (ELT).

Scientific Approach (SA) is one of the most effective approaches in Indonesian EFL context which is implemented in 2013 Curriculum. It is adapted from the science learning method. The emergence of the approach is expected to have significant contribution towards the learning quality in all subjects including English Language. However, it is necessary to investigate how Scientific Approach is implemented by the teacher in EFL Classes. Hence, this study aims at (1) describing how Scientific Approach is implemented in EFL class and (2) the teacher’s response towards the implementation of Scientific Approach in EFL class. The study was descriptive-qualitative research in which the data were collected through observation and interview. Field notes were collected during the observation. The study was conducted in one of the Junior high schools in Krian. The subject chosen was one of the English teachers of Junior high school in Krian who has implemented Scientific Approach in his teaching. The finding showed that the teacher has implemented the approach for teaching recount text in EFL Classes. Five stages of Scientific Approach were also implemented quite well, however, it was found out that the students still got difficulties in the second and the last stage of SA (i.e. questioning and communicating stage). The difficulties which were found were the students were not able to ask questions because they got confused on what they should ask. Sometimes they also felt afraid and unconfident to ask questions. In addition, some students also felt shy when they were asked to perform their task results on the communicating stage. Also, the finding showed that Scientific Approach affects the teacher as the facilitator in the learning process. The teacher also supports that Scientific Approach is able to give significant influence on how the teacher gives the material to the students. Thus, the teacher revealed that Scientific Approach can be the most effective method in English Language Teaching (ELT).
