Students'
critical thinking is low, therefore research is carried out using the POE
model, but when using the POE model for the kinetic theory material of gases, a
medium such as PhET is needed so this study is aimed to produce a proper
learning materials using predict observe explain (POE) model with the PhET that
was reviewed from validity, effiecincy, and effectiveness to improvestudents’critical
thinking skills. This study used 4-D (four D model) development model
consisting of four stages of defining, designing, development, and
dissemination. The design of learning materials trial uses one group pre-test
post-test design. The developed learning materials was tested 52 students at
SMA N 2 Lamongan and 60 students at SMA N 18 Surabaya. The data method uses
validation, observation, tests and questionnaires. Data analysis technique uses
percentage of agreement, N-gain, Wilcoxon test and Mann Whitney test.
The reasearch
results show that: a) The validity of the learning materials developed in terms
of the results of content validity and the construct validity were categorized
as valid with a percentage of agreement of 91.72%, b) effiecincy in terms of
learning process assessment has a very good category,the activities of students were
categorized as very good, the obstacles found during learning can be overcome,
c) The effectiveness in terms of completeness of the five indicators of
critical thinking skill in the complete category. Students’ critical thinking
skills scores improve after implementation of POE learning model with a high
category. There is no difference in class XI MIA 7 and class XI MIA 8 at SMA N
2 Lamongan and there is no difference in class XI MIA 5 and XI MIA 6 at SMA N
18 Surabaya. The four classes gave positive responses to the learning
component and showed a good interest using Predict Observe Explain (POE) model
with the PhET. From the data analysis results, it can be concluded that the
developed learning materials is worth to use in order to improve the students
critical thinking skills.
