Critical thinking is widely recognized as an essential competency for students in the twenty-first century. Nevertheless, the results of the 2018 and 2022 PISA, as well as the Indonesia's Computer-Based National Assessment (ANBK) conducted at MTs Yusuf Annur, indicate that students' critical thinking skills remain unsatisfactory. One promising approach to addressing this issue is the use of innovative, interactive, and contextual learning media. Accordingly, this study aimed to develop Sc-SEBION, a PjBL media that integrates the local wisdom of the Java plum (Syzygium cumini L. ) from Lopang Village in Environmental Exchange Topic for enhancing students' critical thinking skills. The study also described its validity, practicality, and effectiveness. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) design based on the 4D model. Content validity of the teaching module, instructional media, and cognitive assessment instruments (pretest and posttest) was evaluated by three lecturers and one science teacher. The cognitive assessment instruments were further tested for empirical validity using the Pearson Total correlation test and for reliability using Cronbach's alpha. Practicality was evaluated using the System Usability Scale (SUS) completed by 23 VIIB-grade students and supported by classroom implementation observations conducted by two observers. Effectiveness was determined through learning mastery, paired-samples T-test, and N-gain analysis based on pretest and posttest scores. The teaching module, Sc-SEBION, and the cognitive assessment instruments obtained content validity scores of 93.67%, 93.15%, and 93.63%, respectively, indicating a high level of validity. The cognitive assessment instruments were also empirically valid (r = 0.606–0.927) and highly reliable (Cronbach's alpha = 0.936 for the pretest and 0.934 for the posttest). The mean score of SUS is 76.63, corresponding to a Good rating, Grade B, and an Acceptable level of usability, while classroom implementation reached 90.21%. Following the intervention, 78.26% of the students achieved learning mastery, and the difference between the pretest and posttest scores was statistically significant (p<0.001). In addition, the average N-gain score was 0.68, indicating a moderate improvement in critical thinking skills, with the highest score in inference indicator (0.85 in high category). These findings demonstrate that Sc-SEBION is a valid, practical, and effective instructional media for enhancing students' critical thinking skills on the environmental change topic.
