English learning at elementary school level focuses on the formation of basic English language skills in preparation for the intermediate level. English language skills in phase A, namely grades 1 and 2, are specifically for the formation of listening and speaking skills using English. Learning without reading introduction and only using translation methods is a significant problem. Interactive reading aloud activities affect language formation patterns through reciprocal communication as well as modeling of English as a second language.
This study uses a qualitative case study approach to describe in detail the English learning process, interactive reading aloud activities, and constraints and supporting factors for English learning activities with interactive reading aloud. The study was conducted at SD Muhammadiyah 16 Surabaya and SD Labschool UNESA 1 with the process of observation, interviews and documentation studies. Data analysis used an interactive model with the process of collecting, presenting, condensing and verifying data.
The conclusion of this study is that interactive reading aloud activities in English learning affect the involvement, enthusiasm and effectiveness of English learning for autistic students. Behavioral changes begin with happy expressions, eye tracking on the text being read and active communication through verbal and non-verbal means.
