Perspektif Fonologis tentang Perubahan Pengucapan Pada Teknik Vokal Metal

Phonological Perspective on Pronunciation Changes of Metal Vocal Techniques

Musik metal menjadi salah satu genre musik beraliran keras sudah cukup familiar di masyarakat. Telah banyak penelitian mengenai genre music ini pada wilayah penelitian musikologi. Namun, masih sedikit penelitian mengenai teknik vokal yang diterapkan vokalis band metal ketika sedang tampil. Pada ilmu linguistik, masih jarang adanya penelitian pada teknik vokal metal khususnya dari perspektif ilmu fonologi. Pada penelitian ini, tiga vokalis band metal dengan sub-genre metal yang berbeda dipilih sebagai subjek penelitian tentang dampak penerapan teknik vokal metal pada pelafalan mereka.

Penelitian ini mengusut perubahan-perubahan pelafalan yang ditimbulkan dari penerapan teknik vokal metal khususnya scream dan growl yang merupakan teknik vokal pokok pada genre music metal. Tujuan dari penelitain ini adalah untuk mengetahui perubahan pelafalan apa saja yang muncul berdasarkan aturan fonologi serta dampaknya pada kejelasan suara ketiga vokalis saat menerapkan teknik vokal yang berbeda. Penelitian ini didesain secara kualitatif untuk memberikan penjelasan yang luas mengenai fenomena perubahan pelafalan dari perspektif fonologi serta untuk mendeskripsikan seberapa jelas suara para vokalis berdasarkan pengalaman para pendengar.

Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ketiga vokalis mengalami perubahan pelafalan yang berbeda. Vokalis 1 menerapkan teknik vokal melodic dan scream pada lagu “Wait and Bleed” dengan genre Alternative metal. Vokalis 2 menerapkan teknik vokal scream dan growl secara bergantian pada lagu “Redneck” dengan dengan genre Trash metal. Vokalis 3 menerapkan teknik vokal growl pada seluruh lirik lagu “Hammer Smashed Face” yang bergenre Death metal. Telah ditemukan bahwa setiap vokalis mensubstitusi bunyi vokal dan konsonan dengan vokal dan konsonan lain. Pada aspek bunyi vokal, penerapan teknik vokal scream membuat perubahan yang terjadi secara acak dan cukup sulit untuk diidentifikasi karakteristik perubahannya. Di sisi lain, penerapan teknik vokal growl secara umum membuat bunyi vokal berubah menjadi vokal bulat. Selain mengubah bunyi vokal, penerapan teknik vokal metal berdampak dengan adanya penambahan fitur rhoticity pada bunyi vokal baik pre-vocalik atau post-vokalik secara acak. Pada aspek konsonan, para vokalis juga mensubstitusi beberapa segment konsonan dengan konsonan lain. Pada vokalis 1 perubahan konsonan yang paling sering adalah menjadi frikatif, sementara pada vokalis 2 dan 3 perubahannya sulit untuk dikenali polanya. Pada pelafalan vokalis 1 dan 2 yang menerapkan teknik scream, konsonan mendapat penambahan fitur hembusan pada hampir semua konsonan. Di sisi lain, teknik vokal  growl yang diterapkan pada pelafalan vokalis 2 dan 3 membuat konsonan mendapat penambahan fitur breathy-voice yang lebih berat daripada hembusan. Selain mengubah segmen, ditemukan juga penghapusan segmen atau yang dikenal sebagai Segment Deletion yang terjadi pada pelafalan vokalis 1 dan 3. Khususnya pada pelafalan vokalis 3, ditemukan juga pelafalan yang tidak dapat diidentifikasi. Dampak dari penerapan teknik metal vokal membuat pelafalan para vokalis sulit untuk didengar dengan jelas oleh para pendengar. Khususnya pada vokalis 3, tidak ada satupun partisipan yang menyatakan dapat mendengar suaranya dengan jelas.

Metal music has become a genre of loud music that is quite familiar in the community. There have been many studies about this music genre in the area of musicology research. However, there is still few researches on the vocal techniques applied by metal band vocalists while performing. In linguistics, there is still rarely research on vocal metal techniques, especially from the perspective of phonology. In this study, three metal band vocalists with different metal sub-genres were selected as research subjects about the impact of the application of metal vocal techniques on their pronunciation.

This study investigates the pronunciation changes that arise from the application of metal vocal techniques, especially scream and growl which are the main vocal techniques in the metal music genre. The purpose of this research is to find out what changes in pronunciation based on phonological rules and their impact on the voice intelligibility of the three vocalists when applying different vocal techniques. This study was designed qualitatively to provide a broad explanation of the phenomena of pronunciation changes from phonological perspective and to describe how clear the voices of vocalists are based on listeners’ responses.

The results of this study indicate that the three vocalists experienced different pronunciation changes. Vocalist 1 applied melodic and scream vocal techniques on the song "Wait and Bleed" with Alternative metal genre. Vocalist 2 applied scream and growl vocal techniques alternately on the song "Redneck" with Trash metal genre. Vocalist 3 applied the growl vocal technique to the entire lyrics of the song "Hammer Smashed Face" which has Death metal genre. It has been found that each vocalist substituted vowels and consonants with other vowels and consonants. In the vowel aspect, the application of the scream vocal technique had made changes that occur randomly and it was quite difficult to identify the characteristics of the changes. On the other hand, the application of growl vocal techniques generally has made the vowels turn into rounded vowels. In addition to changing the vowel sound, the application of metal vocal technique had an impact with the addition of rhoticity features to the vowel sound, either pre-vocalic or post-vocalic randomly. In the consonant aspect, the vocalists also substituted consonant segments with other consonants. In vocalist 1 the most frequent consonant changes were to be fricative, while in vocalist 2 and 3 the changes were difficult to recognize the pattern. In vocalist 1 and 2 pronunciation which applied scream technique, consonants gained the addition of aspiration features on almost all consonants. On the other hand, the growl vocal technique applied by vocalists 2 and 3 had made consonants get the addition of breathy-voice feature that is heavier than aspiration. In addition to changing segments, it was also found the deletion of segments, also known as Segment Deletion, which occurred in vocalist 1 and 3 pronunciation. Particularly in vocalist 3 pronunciation, it also found unidentified changes of pronunciation. The impact of applying metal vocal techniques makes the vocalist pronunciation difficult to hear clearly by the listeners. Especially for vocalist 3, none of the participants said they could hear his voice clearly.
