Evaluation of the mood state of female athletes during
the menstrual cycle is important, because it can affect physical abilities
which can lead to changes in performance. This study aims to analyze the effect
of infusion of banana microencapsulated products on levels of serotonin, BDNF,
blood serum cortisol and changes in mood swings in female athletes in the
luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. This research is quantitative research, a
type of experimental research with a pre-post test control group research
design. The sampling technique was carried out by purposive sampling.
Thirty-eight trained female athletes (volleyball, handball, floorball, hockey)
never married or had sexual relations, age 20±2 years, BMI 21±3 kg/m2, waist
circumference <90 cm, minimum training period 3 years , training sessions
> 3/week, no serious medical conditions, no use of hormonal contraception or
other medication, no clinical diagnosis of eating disorders, thyroid
dysfunction, no smoking, experiencing dysmenorrhea, premenstrual syndrome, and
mood swings were selected from various sports clubs in East Java. The
distribution and administration of the intervention to the placebo group and
the banana group was carried out randomly (randomization). The number of each
group was 19 people. Data analysis used SPSS version 21. The results of the
study were that steeping banana microencapsulated products 3 hours before
exercise had no effect on increasing serotonin and BDNF levels with Sig.
(2-tailed) 0.494 for serotonin and 0.136 for BDNF, also had no effect on
reducing cortisol levels with Sig. (2-tailed) 0.248, does not improve 30 second
performance with Sig. (2-tailed) 0.139 but improves 60 second performance with
Sig. (2-tailed) 0,000. Giving a brew of banana microencapsulated product 3
hours before exercise reduces negative mood scores with the Sig. (2-tailed)
0.024 for tension, 0.000 depression, 0.001 anger, 0.001 fatigue, 0.003
confusion but did not increase the positive mood score with the Sig. (2-tailed)
0.309 for enthusiasm. The conclusion of this research is that the banana
microencapsulation product can improve endurance performance in 60 second push
ups with a strong effect of 7% and reduce negative mood scores such as tension,
depression, anger, fatigue and confusion, but does not increase levels of
serotonin, BDNF and push ups 30 seconds and did not reduce cortisol levels in
female athletes in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.
