THE MODERATING ROLE OF EXERCISE MOTIVATION IN EXPLAINING THE INFLUENCE OF BODY IMAGE ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN COLLEGE STUDENTS
Penelitian ini bertujuan menguji pengaruh body image terhadap aktivitas fisik dengan motivasi berolahraga sebagai variabel moderasi pada mahasiswa di salah satu universitas di Kota Surabaya. Desain penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan model Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). Sebanyak 140 mahasiswa berusia 18-23 tahun terlibat, menggunakan instrumen Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) untuk mengukur body image, International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-SF) untuk aktivitas fisik, dan Exercise Motivation Inventory-2 (EMI-2) untuk motivasi berolahraga. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa body image tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap aktivitas fisik (β = -0,028; p = 0,725), sedangkan motivasi berolahraga berpengaruh positif dan signifikan (β = 0,379; p < 0,001). Selain itu, motivasi berolahraga tidak memoderasi hubungan antara body image dan aktivitas fisik (β = -0,113; p = 0,157), namun berperan sebagai prediktor perilaku aktif mahasiswa. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa motivasi berolahraga berperan langsung sebagai prediktor utama aktivitas fisik mahasiswa, sehingga penguatan motivasi personal dan sosial lebih efektif dibanding pembentukan persepsi tubuh ideal dalam mendorong gaya hidup aktif di lingkungan kampus.
This study aims to examine the effect of body image on physical activity with exercise motivation as a moderating variable in students at a university in Surabaya. The research design used a quantitative approach with a Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) model. A total of 140 students aged 18-23 years were involved, using the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) to measure body image, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-SF) for physical activity, and the Exercise Motivation Inventory-2 (EMI-2) for exercise motivation. The results showed that body image had no significant effect on physical activity (β = -0.028; p = 0.725), while exercise motivation had a positive and significant effect (β = 0.379; p < 0.001). In addition, exercise motivation did not moderate the relationship between body image and physical activity (β = -0.113; p = 0.157), but acted as a predictor of students' active behavior. These findings confirm that exercise motivation plays a direct role as a major predictor of students' physical activity, so that strengthening personal and social motivation is more effective than forming ideal body perceptions in encouraging an active lifestyle in the campus environment.
