Penelitian ini memfokuskan pada pemahaman konsep limit fungsi mahasiswa calon guru yang mengacu pada pendapat Hiebert dan Carpenter (1992) dengan intisari kajian terdiri dari: pertama, banyaknya pengaitan yang dapat dibangun antara unsur yang terdapat pada konsep dengan skema yang dimiliki orang tersebut; kedua, kualitas jaringan yang terbentuk, apakah unsur yang yang dikaitkan merupakan unsur yang esensial atau bukan. Selanjutnya dikarakterisasi dalam tujuh kategori, yaitu: (1) merepresentasikan suatu masalah ke dalam limit fungsi, (2) definisi limit fungsi, (3) dekonstruksi definisi limit fungsi, (4) pembedahan fungsi ditinjau dari ada atau tidak punya limit di suatu titik tertentu, (5)   evaluasi suatu algoritma limit fungsi, (6) penerapan prinsip limit fungsi,dan (7) eksistensi limit fungsi.

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk memperoleh profil pemahaman konsep limit fungsi mahasiswa calon guru yang berkemampuan matematika tinggi dan sedang. Penelitian ini dipandang penting dengan pertimbangan bahwa kalkulus diferensial merupakan mata kuliah utama bagi mahasiswa matematika dan limit fungsi menjadi bagian dari kalkulus diferensial. Selain itu, hasil-hasil penelitian sebelumnya menunjukkan bahwa konsep limit fungsi merupakan salah satu materi yang sulit dipahami.

Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksploratif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Subjek penelitian terdiri dua orang mahasiswa calon guru dari Jurusan Pendidikan Matematika FKIP UHO yang telah atau sedang memprogramkan matakuliah kalkulus diferensial, yang diidentifikasi sebagai mahasiswa berkemampuan tinggi dan sedang. Kedua subjek ini ditentukan melalui hasil tes kemampuan matematika (TKM) dan didukung oleh nilai matakuliah kalkulus diferensial. Data penelitian berupa hasil tes konsep limit fungsi dan wawancara yang mendalam (in-depth), terbuka (overt), dan tidak terstruktur (unstructured). Data penelitian yang valid dan kredibel dilakukan analisis secara komprehensif untuk menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan penelitian, dan juga mengungkap temuan- temuan menarik sebagai dampak pengiring dari hasil penelitian.

Hasil dari penelitian ini dikemukakan sebagai berikut berdasarkan kategorinya: pertama merepresentasikan suatu masalah ke dalam limit fungsi, secara umum subjek berkemampuan matematika tinggi memiliki konsistensi dalam menjelaskan dalam mengemukakan pemahamannya terkait dengan penyajian suatu masalah kontekstual yang dapat direpresentasikan ke dalam konsep limit fungsi. Sedangkan subjek berkemampuan matematika sedang secara prosedural dapat merepresentasikan masalah tersebut kedalam konsep limit fungsi tetapi secara konseptual subjek sedang tidak dapat menuliskan batasan fungsi yang dibuat dengan benar, kedua penjelasan definisi limit fungsi, baik subjek berkemampuan matematika tinggi maupun subjek berkemampuan matematika sedang mampu menuliskan definisi limit fungsi baik secara intuisi maupun formal dengan menyebutkan unsur-unsur pembangun konsep limit fungsi dan keterkaitannya, ketiga dekonstruksi definisi limit fungsi, subjek berkemampuan matematika tinggi mengidentifikasi atau menuliskan beberapa komponen yang membangun konsep limit fungsi dan memberikan penjelasan terkait dengan komponen-komponen tersebut tapi tidak lengkap, pada subjek berkemampuan matematika sedang tidak yakin denga apa yang disebutkan dengan menuliskan beberapa komponen/unsur pembangun definisi limit fungsi dan tidak lengkap atau tidak utuh keempat kategori pembedahan fungsi ditinjau dari ada atau tidak punya limit di suatu titik tertentu, subjek berkemampuan matematika tinggi dan sedang mampu memberikan contoh dan menjelaskan suatu fungsi mempunyai limit atau tidak di suatu titik tertentu, kelima kategori evaluasi suatu algoritma limit fungsi, subjek berkemampuan matematika tinggi memeriksa, menemukan atau menunjukkan kesalahan algoritma dari penyelesaian soal limit fungsi yang diberikan serta menunjukkan sifat-sifat limit fungsi yang berlaku dalam setiap langkah penyelesaian soal limit fungsi yang diberikan, untuk subjek sedang secara prosedural menunjukkan dan menjelaskan penyelesaian yang benar tanpa menunjukkan atau menjelaskan sifat-sifat limit fungsi yang berlaku didalamnya, keenam kategori penerapan prinsip limit fungsi, subjek berkemampuan matematika tinggi dan sedang memulai menyelesaikan soal  yang diberikan dengan cara menguraikan fungsi tersebut ke dalam beberapa bagian, kemudian mencari beberapa titik koordinat dari setiap fungsi tersebut dan inilah yang dijadikan dasar untuk mensketsakan grafiknya, namun subjek sedang tidak teliti dalam menentukan titik koordinat pada fungsi tertentu. Aktivitas yang dilakukan oleh subjek berkemampuan matematika tinggi dan sedang untuk memeriksa fungsi yang diberikan kaitannya memilliki nilai limit fungsi dilakukannya dengan menunjukkan apakah fungsi tersebut mempunyai limit kiri, limit kanan dan besar nilai sama, dan ketujuh kategori eksistensi limit fungsi, subjek berkemampuan matematika tinggi dan sedang mampu mengidentifikasi unsur limit, melakukan perencanaan dan eksekusi pembuktian, dan memberikan kesimpulan atau konklusi pembuktian dalam eksistensi limit fungsi.

Sebagai bagian dari hasil penelitian, terdapat temuan-temuan menarik dari penelitian ini, yaitu: subjek sedang dalam merepresentasikan suatu masalah kontekstual kedalam masalah limit fungsi secara konseptual belum dipahami dengan ketat, tergambar saat subjek sedang menentukan batasan fungsi yang dituliskan tidak tepat. Hal ini berpotensi terjadinya ketidakmampuan SS menggunakan pemahamannya untuk menyelesaikan atau menjelaskan masalah- masalah yang ada kaitannya dengan hal tersebut, misalnya terjadinya kesalahan dalam merpresentasikan kedalam diagram garis. 

Subjek tinggi maupun subjek sedang hanya mampu mengidentifikasi dan menjelaskan beberapa unsur pembangun dari definisi limit fungsi, misalnya fungsi, nilai limit, epsilon (e) dan delta (d). Terlihat bahwa subjek tinggi dan subjek sedang  tidak dapat menyebutkan secara lengkap unsur atau komponen pembangun dari konsep limit fungsi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang dikemukakan, maka sangat beralasan bahwa belajar dengan pemahaman menjadi sesuatu yang patut dipertimbangkan dalam membahas materi limit fungsi.

This study focused on the profile of pre-service teachers’ understanding of the concept of the limit of function, which was drawn on Hiebert and Carpenter’s (1992) conceptualization, with the analysis being emphasized on two points. First, a number of networks can be established between the elements of the concept and the individual’s schema. Second, the quality of the networks is dependent upon whether the related elements are essential or not. These are then characterized into seven categorizations, including: (1) representation of a problem into the limit of a function, (2) definition of thelimit of a function, (3) deconstruction of the definition of the limit of a function, (4) analysis of the function in terms of whether or not a limit exists at some point; (5) evaluation of the algorithm of the limit of a function, (5)   application of the principle of the limit of a function, and (7) existence of the limit of a function.

The qualitative study aimed to determine the conceptual understanding of the limit of a function as demonstrated by pre-service math teachers with advanced and intermediate competence in mathematics. This investigation was essential given that differential calculus is a core course in mathematics department and the limit of a function is a part of the course. Besides, past studies on the topic have shown that the limit of a function is one of the most difficult concepts to understand. The study was meant to be explorative using a qualitative approach. Subjects included two pre-service teachers in the Department of Mathematics Education, at the College of Education and Teacher Training, Halu Oleo University. The subjects were enrolled in differential calculus course and were identified as having mathematic skills at an advanced and intermediate level. The subjects were recruited based on their outstanding results of a mathematics proficiency test as well as their high grades for the differential calculus course. Data of the study were collected using a test of the concept of the limit of a function and in-depth, overt, and unstructured interviews. Valid and credible data were analyzed thoroughly to answer the research questions and to discover interesting by-product findings of the study.

Findings are presented into categories, as follows. First, in terms of their ability to represent a problem into the limit of a function, thesubject with advanced mathematics skills was able to consistently explain his/her understanding about how a contextual problem could be represented into the concept of the limit of a function. The other subject, who had intermediate mathematic skills, was able to explain the procedure of representing a contextual problem into the concept of the limit of a function; however, the subject was unable to express the limit of a function correctly. Second, regarding their ability to define the limit of a function, both subjects were able to do it correctly, both intuitively and formally, as they were able to define the building elements of the limit of a function and how they are related to each other. Third, when it came to deconstructing the definition of the limit of a function, both subjects were only able to identify some components that define the concept of the limit of a function. Fourth, as for the ability to analyze whether a function has a limit at some point, both subjects were able to provide examples and explain whether a function has a limit at some point. Fifth, with respect to the ability to evaluate the algorithm of the limit of a function, both subjects were able to go over, discover, and identify algorithmic errors in the solution to the limit of a function problem. Moreover, they were able to determine the characteristics of the limit of a function that are applicable to each step to solving the problem related to the limit of a function that they were requested to do. Sixth, in relation to the application of the principles of the limit of a function, both subjects were able to solve the problem by breaking down the function into several components, locating several coordinates of each function, and using this information as the basis for sketching their graphs. In accomplishing the task of checking the function to see how it was related to the value of the limit of the function, both subjects determined whether the function had a left and a right limit, and whether their values were equal. Seventh, concerning the existence of the limit of a function, both subjects were able to identify the components of the limit, to plan out and execute the verification, and to draw some conclusions based on the verification for the existence of the limit of a function.

Results of the analysis also uncovered several interesting findings. The subject with intermediate mathematic skills did not show a solid conceptual understanding of how to represent a contextual problem into the limit of a function, as was reflected in his/her inability to correctly determine the limit of the function. Consequently, the subject was potentially unable to use his/her understanding to explain or solve related problem. For instance, the subject committed an error when representing the problem into a line diagram. 

Both subjects were only able to identify and explain several elements that define the limit of a function, namely function, limit value, epsilon (e), and delta (d). It was clear that both subjects were unable to describe the complete elements that create the limit of a function. Given these findings, it is argued that learning with understanding is worth to consider when discussing the limit of a function.
