Abstract
In Indonesia, there are three
traditionally managed shipyards, one of them is Tanjung Jati Village,
Bangkalan–Madura Regency. Tanjung Jati village is very close to Kamal Harbor,
scrap metal processing activities when dismantling ships are carried out using
heavy machines so that they can produce thick smoke, this is what causes air
pollution to surrounding residential areas, because according to the Head of
Tanjung Jati Village, that many residents complained of shortness of breath and
unpleasant odors from the processing activities. Water pollution, due to scrap
metal processing activities also produces waste that is dumped directly into
the sea because it does not have a waste treatment site from the ships
dismantling activities. This study aims to determine how the response of the
surrounding community and the handling of the community that have an impact on
the environment in Tanjung Jati Village.
The type of research used is
qualitative and quantitative research. The method used is a qualitative
descriptive method with the research technique used is the Hubermen and Miles
model. The object of this research is the impact of scrap metal processing on
the environment in Tanjung Jati village and the subjects are village heads,
educated people, scrap metal workers (foremen).
The results of the analysis of
environmental impacts resulting from the processing of scrap metal that is not
managed properly causes air pollution and water pollution indirectly. The
social impact of scrap metal processing activities for the surrounding
community is that many children do not want to go to school because of the
noise and fish fishermen change professions to become iron collectors, knowing
that the fish they take are of poor quality. The communitys response is good
and accepts the establishment of a scrap metal processing site because this has
been going on for decades and there is no handling of environmental damage.
