Gender Performativity in Becky Albertalli’s Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda
Esai ini menganalisis masalah performativitas gender dalam karya Becky Albertalli Simon Vs. Agenda Homo Sapiens (2015). Diketahui bahwa novel ini menantang anggapan masyarakat Amerika tentang bagaimana orang seharusnya memandang, bereaksi, dan mengalami gender dan seksualitas melalui pengalaman performatif orang homoseksual. This essay analyzes gender performativity issues in Becky Albertalli's Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda (2015). It is known that the novel challenges American society's preconceived notions about how people should perceive, react to, and experience gender and sexuality via the performative experiences of a homosexual person. This research aims to demonstrate how gender and sexual identity are perceived in the novel's notion of performativity, as well as how societal constructions of gender and attitudes toward particular sexual orientations. The discussion is framed by using Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity. This analysis finds out that gender was managed by societal standards in this way through a succession of performativity through the thematic analysis of the novel. The pressure of cultural norms that see persons who have a different sexual orientation from those of commoners as deviance prompts Simon, the novel's main character, to experience that being homosexual is difficult to express his identity.
