VIOLATING MAXIM OF QUALITY IN A MOVIE “MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS”

ABSTRAK

Studi tentang melanggar maksim kualitas adalah hal yang penting karena berhubungan dengan percakapan yang dilakukan orang. Pepatah kualitas sangat penting karena, ketika orang berbicara, mereka membutuhkan informasi yang dapat diandalkan untuk menjadi sukses dalam bertukar ide terutama ketika pendengar mencari jawaban atas pertanyaan. Namun, tidak semua orang bisa mengatakan yang sebenarnya, beberapa dari mereka cenderung berbohong sebagai representasi dari melanggar maksim kualitas terhadap lawan bicara mereka dalam beberapa situasi. Melanggar pepatah kualitas berarti pembicara mengatakan kebohongan kepada pendengar dengan niat untuk menipu mereka. Dalam melanggar pepatah kualitas, pembicara memiliki cara mereka untuk melakukan dan alasan mengapa mereka melakukan ini melanggar pepatah kualitas. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menyajikan maksim melanggar kualitas untuk mempresentasikan cara, tujuan, dan perannya terhadap plot dalam film "Murder on the Orient Express". Teori oleh Grice, Christoffersen dan Freytag menjadi tiga teori utama penelitian ini. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif di mana data diambil dari film dan peneliti menjadi instrumen untuk menjelaskan data. Ditemukan dalam penelitian ini bahwa ada 4 cara yang digunakan oleh karakter untuk melanggar maksim kualitas dalam film dan 7 tujuan yang mendorong karakter melanggar maksim kualitas. Pepatah melanggar kualitas berkontribusi membangun alur cerita di film.

ABSTRACT

The study of violating maxim of quality is an important thing since it connects to a conversation that people deal with. Maxim of quality is essential because, when people having a conversation, they need reliable information to be successful in exchanging idea especially when the hearer looking for an answer to a question. However, not all people can say the truth, some of them tend to lie as the representation of violating maxim of quality toward their interlocutor in some situations. Violating maxim of quality means speakers saying lie to the hearers with the intension to deceive them. In violating maxim of quality, the speakers have their ways to do and the reason why they do this violating maxim of quality. This study is conducted to present the violating maxim of quality to present the ways, the purposes, and the role of it toward the plot in the movie “Murder on the Orient Express”. Theories by Grice, Christoffersen, and Freytag become three main theories of this study. This study is a descriptive qualitative study in which the data is taken from a movie and the researcher becomes the instrument to explain the data. It is found in this study that there are 4 ways used by characters to violate maxim of quality in the movie and 7 purposes that encourage the characters to violate maxim of quality. The violating maxim of qualities contributes to building the plot of the story in the movie.
