Exploitation and Conservation: Human Attitudes towards Nature in Frank Herbert's Dune

Penerapan ilmu ekologi sebagai fondasi utama dari narasinya menjadikan Dune yang ditulis oleh Frank Herbert dianggap sebagai pelopor karya fiksi ilmiah berbasis ekologi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji eksploitasi dan konservasi alam serta bagaimana latar belakang manusia mempengaruhi perilaku tersebut di Dune karya Frank Herbert. Peneliti menggunakan pendekatan ekokritik terhadap literatur untuk membahas data yang terkumpul. Melalui analisis tematik, artikel ini mengungkapkan bagaimana Dune menyoroti konflik pihak otoritas dan penduduk asli Arrakis yang dipicu oleh melimpahnya rempah-rempah melange dan tidak adanya air dan tumbuh-tumbuhan, di mana dua kubu masyarakat ini memiliki perlakuan yang bertolak belakang dalam terhadap sumber daya alam—mengeksploitasi dan melestarikan. Selain itu, penelitian ini mengungkap bahwa upaya pemerasan alam yang dilakukan oleh Galactic Imperium, Harkonnens, CHOAM, dan Space Guild didorong oleh motif politik dan ekonomi, sedangkan upaya konservasi dari Fremen dan Atreides adalah hasil dari kesadaran ekologis mereka.

Employing ecology as the pivotal basis of its narrative, Dune by Frank Herbert regarded as the pioneer of ecological science-fiction novels. This study intends to examine the exploitation and conservation of nature and how human background influences such behaviours in Frank Herbert’s Dune. The researcher employs an ecocritical approach to literature to discuss the compiled data. Through the thematic analysis, the article reveals how Dune highlights the conflict of the authority party and the indigenous society of Arrakis triggered by the abundance of the spice melange and the absence of water and vegetation, where these two sides of the population have contradictory intentions towards natural resources—exploiting and conserving. Moreover, the study unveils that the extortion attempt of the Galactic Imperium, the Harkonnens, CHOAM, and the Spacing Guild is driven by political and economic motives and the conservation effort of the Fremen and the Atreides is the outcome of their ecological awareness.
