Development of Picture Storybooks Based on Madurese Culture from a Constructivist Perspective to Improve Reading Interest and Reading Comprehension of Second Grade Elementary School Students

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan buku cerita bergambar berbasis budaya Madura yang diintegrasikan dengan pendekatan konstruktivisme dan nilai pendidikan karakter, serta untuk mengetahui kevalidan, kepraktisan, dan keefektifannya dalam meningkatkan minat baca dan pemahaman bacaan murid kelas II. Kondisi ini terkonfirmasi melalui wawancara dan observasi di SDIT Ulil Albab, di mana murid kelas II menunjukkan pemahaman bacaan yang masih terbatas serta minim paparan terhadap bahan ajar yang merefleksikan budaya lokal Madura. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan Research and Development dengan model ADDIE, yang mencakup tahap Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, dan Evaluation. Produk divalidasi oleh ahli materi, ahli bahasa, dan ahli grafis, kemudian diujicobakan pada kelompok kecil (enam murid) dan kelompok besar (dua belas murid) di SDIT Ulil Albab. Data dikumpulkan melalui lembar validasi ahli, angket respons guru dan murid, lembar observasi, serta tes pemahaman bacaan pada tahap pretest dan posttest. Hasil validasi menunjukkan buku berada pada kategori sangat valid, dengan skor 96,7% dari ahli grafis, 94,6% dari ahli materi, dan 92,2% dari ahli bahasa. Hasil kepraktisan menunjukkan respons guru mencapai 90% dengan kategori sangat baik, sementara respons murid menunjukkan penerimaan positif terhadap tampilan, isi, dan kemudahan penggunaan buku. Hasil keefektifan diukur melalui uji Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test dengan nilai signifikansi sebesar 0,005, yang menunjukkan perbedaan signifikan antara hasil pretest dan posttest. Nilai N-Gain minat baca sebesar 0,34 berada pada kategori sedang, sedangkan nilai N-Gain pemahaman bacaan sebesar 0,76 berada pada kategori tinggi. Temuan ini membuktikan bahwa buku cerita bergambar bilingual berbasis budaya Madura valid, praktis, dan efektif dalam meningkatkan minat baca dan pemahaman bacaan murid kelas II sekolah dasar.

This study aims to develop an illustrated storybook grounded in Madurese local culture, integrated with a constructivist approach and character education values, and to examine its validity, practicality, and effectiveness in enhancing reading interest and reading comprehension among second-grade elementary school students. The need for this development was confirmed through interviews and observations conducted at SDIT Ulil Albab, where second-grade students demonstrated limited reading comprehension skills and insufficient exposure to instructional materials that reflect their local Madurese cultural background. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, encompassing five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The developed product was validated by subject matter, linguistics, and graphic design experts, and subsequently trialed with a small group of six students and a larger group of twelve students at SDIT Ulil Albab. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, teacher and student response questionnaires, observation sheets, and reading comprehension tests administered at the pretest and posttest stages. Validation results indicated that the storybook achieved a highly valid category, with scores of 96.7% from the graphic design expert, 94.6% from the subject matter expert, and 92.2% from the linguistics expert. In terms of practicality, teacher responses reached 90%, classified as excellent, while student responses reflected positive reception regarding the book's visual design, content, and ease of use. Effectiveness was assessed through the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, yielding a significance value of 0.005, which indicates a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest results. The N-Gain score for reading interest was 0.34, falling within the moderate category, whereas the N-Gain score for reading comprehension was 0.76, classified within the high category. These findings demonstrate that the bilingual illustrated storybook based on Madurese culture is valid, practical, and effective in improving reading interest and reading comprehension among second-grade elementary school students.
