The rationale of this study is based on
the fact that science learning on the topic of Renewable Energy Sources is
still dominated by conventional methods, which have not optimally facilitated
21st-century skills, particularly creative thinking. Therefore, there is a need
for learning materials that are more contextual, systematic, and innovative
through the integration of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and STEAM. This study
aims to develop PBL–STEAM-based learning materials that are valid, practical,
and effective in improving students’ creative thinking skills. The method used
is a development research approach employing the ADDIE model (analysis, design,
development, implementation, and evaluation).
The research was carried out at SMP
Negeri 47 Surabaya in the odd semester of the 2025/2026 school year with the subject
of 60 grade IX students. Data collection techniques include expert validation,
student response questionnaires, creative thinking pretest tests, and
documentation. The research instruments are in the form of teaching module validation
sheets and LKPD, validation sheets for creative thinking test instruments,
student response questionnaires, and creative thinking tests based on Torrance
indicators (fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration). Data analysis
techniques include Aiken's V for validity, descriptive analysis for
practicality, and effectiveness analysis using descriptive statistics, N-gain,
Shapiro–Wilk normality test, Mann–Whitney test, and Cohen's effect size d.
The results of the study indicate that
the PBL–STEAM-based learning materials meet the criteria of being valid,
practical, and effective in improving students’ creative thinking skills. These
PBL–STEAM materials are suitable for use in science learning on the topic of
Renewable Energy Sources. For future implementation, teachers are advised to
allocate more time for project completion, as fostering genuine creative
thinking requires students to start from scratch.
